Dominion Of The Black and the Devourer

General Discussion

One of the Pathfinder books says something about how the Dominion seems to worship black holes like they are gods. Since the Devourer is a god who basically IS a sentient black hole, do most of them now worship him?

I suspect not. Like, the cult of the devourer is very much it's own thing, and I imagine they'd want to keep the Dominion a bit more esoteric than having them worship just a straight up deity rather than a more alien concept.

I believe there's lore (in PF) that the Dominion of the Black ultimately "serves" Yog-Sothoth, and the nothingness they seek to spread is that which comes between the death of one multiverse and birth of the next.

(I say "serves" in that Yog-Sothoth probably doesn't know they exist.)

I thought they hated the Outer Gods and Great Old Ones?

I think it's tied to the belief (by some) that Yog-Sothoth is the Dark Tapestry.

Though I'll confess I've spent the evening trying to dig up the specific source and can't find it.

My own take is that the Dominion of the Black. . . well, they certainly respect and/or fear the Outer Gods and Great Old Ones, but by and large they don't worship them. Rather, they "worship" their own upper ranks, who reach up to the demigod level of eldritch abomination themselves. A god isn't some incomprehensible being you can only approvingly watch from a distance and emulate, a god is someone you too could become if you live long enough and bio-engineer yourself enough and eat enough brains.

now picturing the interfaith commission where the rovagaug and dominion of the black folks bond over brain devouring.

since it is impossible to know what happens inside of a black hole, it is possible that all of them are sentient...

As an aside, I tend to figure that the Devourer is connected to Eternity's Doorstep.

Either the Doorstep is the Devourer in an earlier quiescent state, or a cocoon from which the Devourer eventually emerged, or perhaps a prison.

Devourer has this weird thing of essentially being not!Rovagug and as such otherwise disconnected to lot of settings things that would make sense for "evil blackhole god"

That said, Devourer's form of nihilism isn't compatible with Dominions of the Black as they are very much into empire building and such instead of wanting to end reality :p

Yeah, I imagine Devourer-worshippers are *maybe* marginally more welcome in Dominion society as in more normal, non-horrifying-aberration society. And even that might be generous, the brain eaters might instead just go "If you hate existence and love destruction, go worship Azathoth or Nyarlathotep or *someone* who isn't going to mandate that you also destroy us too".

Speaking of the Dominion of the Black, didn't even get a shout out in Galactic Magic.

Sad!
