Starfinder racial Fashion

General Discussion

I am curious on peoples thoughts on the general fashion preferences of some of the prominent races in Starfinder.
Are there any real world cultures to use as reference to their styles?

I think the biggest impact race in Starfinder has on clothing, is dose it have enough armholes for you. Each race might have multiple cultures just like humans do.

Character class might make more of a difference in fashion. Envoys dressing to help influence, operatives being able to hide or blend in combat-oriented classes dress for battle. Gender and or social class all so could have a big effect on fashion.

Normally weather or climate might be a big influence but with armor in Starfinder having environment controls, the weather doesn't necessarily have to have as much of an effect on fashion, at least not for the PCs with armor.

Historically fashion trends started out changing every century or so, then every decade, then every season, now a trend could get started just by posting a picture on social media. In a sci-fi setting the pace of fashion could go from everyone dresses the same to feeling you're out of place for wearing last hours fashion.

Specialty for a sci-fi setting movie reference might work well too.

I was thinking more on general styles rather then 'on the job' clothing.
For example, the Kasatha are desert based, so I am guessing I should probably look into countries in those areas for style of clothing. I know that the most recent S pop band and what not will effect whats fashionable, I am looking towards what a more traditional clothing might lean towards.
With the Lashunta, does the dimorphism effect their dress styles? How do they dress for simple day to day life verses going fancy.
Does the number of pockets on your vest make a Ysoki more appealing?

For more context, I have done little tokens for my groups characters, usually revolving around the armour descriptions and such. I was after making ones of them not on the job so knowing racial preferences would help.

Considering how fantastical and inhuman most species in Starfinder are I do not think that the real world offers much inspiration for clothes (although can serve as a basis).

For example species with scales etc. might not even need clothing and never have developed a clothing culture so to speak. See for example the official pictures of Dragonkin (Starfinder and Pathfinder). They are either naked except for some belts or wear "work clothes" like armor, uniform or space suits.

Furred or feathered species would also have special clothing choices as fur/feathers and some type of clothes do not mix well.

Some other differences between species might also effect clothing choices, although those are mostly out of scope of Starfinder. (For example a species with poor color vision will wear more brightly colored clothes, see Vargr from Traveller).

As for culture, there you are free to invent something. Starfinder does not describe culture a lot (or at all). And considering the size of the setting there will be multiple cultures and clothing styles for each planet instead of monocultures like in Star Wars.

And considering that Starfinder is more on the cosmopolitan side (except for places like Azlanti or Eox) there will be numerous instances where the clothing requirements of a species mix with the cultural norms to create new combinations which will then either be limited to this species in said culture or become "appropriated" and influence clothes in that cultural area as a whole.
On the other hand, some members of the newcomer species might try to fit in and wear the unaltered clothes of the adopted culture.

In short, it will likely be a huge mess and especially in areas with a lot of travelers or the meeting point of many species it will look more like a circus with everyone wearing vastly different clothes.

love the idea of Ysoki pocket appeal. so many things you can do with pockets number of pockets shape and size of pockets, different pocket closures, hidden pockets. Adding metal plates in your pockets turns it into a coat of plates. might have labeled or color-coated pockets to help find things faster to avoid wasting actions looking.

As for desert fashion I live in the 2nd hottest city on the planet I just wear shorts and a tee-shirt year-round. If your looking for more traditional clothing look at desert cultures that don't have AC which will likely tend towards long loss fitting layers of a light color cloth. Some form a head covering to keep your brain from baking.

great question about the dimorphism effect. I don't have the answer to that, but I hope Piazo is reading this post, I think your answer belongs in the official "Starfinder fashion catalog" besides being useful would break the chain of books ending in "manual"

If you've seen name that tune this will make sense...

"I can fix that engine with the content of 4 pockets.

"Well IIII can fix that engine with the content of Three pockets...

"Well I can fix it with the content of ONE pocket...

"AH! You've hit upon a very CRUCIAL aspect of modern fashion in our reality! a crisply-armored Nuar offers with a very bright smile. Observant sorts may even realize that she's a Fashion Icon!

"While trends and ideas remain at the forefront of the development of the art of fashion, it's very important to recall that every fashion statement has an origin point. Whether it be "Do I want to look shinier than the rest of the party tonight?" or "Does this sash make me look too thin?", the idea of "Where did this idea get inspired?" should always be the first place to look.

For the numerous sentients, sapients, and sophonts across the Prime Material, this has always been a constant, and by examining the very soul of an outfit, one can determine incredible things about not just the culture of the person wearing it, but also the things they view as important -- or not."

"My personal passion? If *I* can make an outfit 'look good', then ANY sentient can!"

Speaking of fashion origins, reminded me of William Gibson's Zero History.

Fashion Icon you say, was it on the cover of Cosmos-politan that I saw you?

"I deeply appreciate the fact you avoided 'Cos-Moo-Politan'. In fashion, so many folks get hung up on 'the body type' that they don't consider the aesthetic of outfit design as a whole. While physiological considerations are important, they shouldn't rule a piece, nor make it impractical like some of those disasters that hopped down the walkway at Grand Inza last spring -- second skin is a responsibility, not a right!

And this also reflects in the 'corporate design process', as well. It's easy to cut corners to slap something together for mass production, but the resulting product loses whatever daring spirit birthed the motif in the first place."

I imagine in many of the worlds society is very cosmopolitan and so you wont have "racial" trends for fashion, as much as trends from around the net or trends that make sense based on where you live and what you do.

If you live in a desert it makes sense to wear desert appropriate attire, regardless of what species you are. But a kasatha that grew up on Absalom station and has spent their whole life there probably isn't going to wear desert clothes.

You would have racial trends in the sense that different races have different physiological (and maybe even psychological) requirements for the clothes they were.

What type of "skin" they have (scales, feather, excreting slime, ...) the number of appendages, being cold or warm blooded (at which temperature), requiring a certain humidity, what colours they can perceive, supernatural abilities like being able to shapeshift or being on fire, etc.
All that would affect clothes in addition to just culture.

All this fashion talk got me wondering what the current state of 3D-printed clothing is.
Go to 3D-printed clothing.

This gets me wondering just how advance is 3D printing in Starfiner. Even if 3D printers are cheap enough for the everyday person in Starfinder high fashion might be out of reach due to the high cost of special printing materials. I'm 1/2 way through reading Jumkers Delight, "if" you had access to a 3D printer you could bypass part of the adventure. Since 3D printing is such a plot solver what could limit a PC's use of them.

3d printing in starfinder turns the same material into food, cel phones, flashlights, computers, power armor, and magical sticks. Its a small step below a startrek matter replicator in that it takes time, requires specific matter to work, and requires technical skill depending on the item but otherwise can do the same thing. Every house that has a garage would have a 3d printer in it and its mentioned that you can rent worker space at the same rate as a hotel or flat.

"Universal Polymer Base has been the great 'equalizer' and has actually brought fashion prices down quite a bit -- as well as encouraged a lot of open-source creativity. The limits are one's imagination, versus an older method of scarcity manipulation to achieve perfection. Of course, if one camps out on the UPB former one should remember to tip the maintenance team well --- trying to make something out of skintex can get downright messy if the nozzles for the spraying cycle aren't maintained properly."

I use to have a glue sculpture that came off a leaking packing line conveyor belt, that I used for a slime creature miniature.

Lets look at it from a more structured point of view.
Why do people wear clothes?

Imo because:

1. Protection.
Not in a Starfinder armor class sense, but protection from environmental effects. Cold, heat, direct sunlight, rain or something more exotic like spores or nasty insects.
This is probably the category that changes most with biology and region. For example a scaled race, especially a cold blooded one, certainly won't need protection from sunlight and a furred race has a much higher tolerance from cold, etc.
Also with advancing technology this becomes less and less important, but by that time it has become a tradition (see below)

2. Utility
Not really a reason for clothes itself, I do not consider a single utility belt to be clothes (the Dragonkin picture in Alien Archive) but it certainly influences clothes. For example when you often have to go through muddy or otherwise filthy areas (European cities during the renaissance for example) your trousers and skirts will be shorter to not get dirty and you either wear boots or shoes with very tall soles.

3. Decoration
Unless the species in question has a very different idea of esthetics than humans they will certainly want to decorate themselves to look pretty for some reason or the other. And when you do have to wear clothes anyway you can use them to that end. This is the main driving factor behind the clothes industry today and probably would also be in Starfinder. (Unless your species doesn't need clothes and gets away with jeweler or similar things. Also there are other options to satisfy the need like tattoos/paint etc. mostly based on the species skin type).
This is the most flexible category where the GM has full freedom to implement his idea as there is no real logical reason for new trends.

4. Identity
Clothes can signify membership to a group. The military with its uniform come to mind of course, but they are hardly the only institution to wear them. Schools, clubs, religions or even gangs have their form of uniforms, even when they are just specific articles of clothing or even a specific brand of them.
(One example, in one of my travels my hotel was in a Jewish orthodox quarter and being the only one not wearing the religious garbs was really intimidating).
Cultures too would be groups identified by clothing and a migrant who wants to fully assimilate in its new home might start to wear their clothes while others want to keep their cultural identity and wear the clothes of their former home. Although that is not a binary decision but a sliding scale.

A word on gendered clothing, that too is mainly a identity issue. Although it also has a biological component. The more sexual dimorphism there is the more likely that the genders will have different clothes. Imo Korasha and Damaya Lashunta would most certainly have different clothes. Species with no or little sexual dimorphism might not even have gendered clothes at all (but when living in an area with many members of other species might start to wear gendered clothes just so that others who are not able to determine the gender of one of them on sight might know what they are).

5. Tradition.
Not really a category for itself, but it mainly means that one of the other reason stated above has become so ingrained that it is followed even though there is no reason for it. But those rules can also come from other sources. For example when a religion (which might even be dead already) preached that showing your ankles is frivolous it will certainly affect the design of clothes and might still be followed even though only few people know why.

One aspect of this that you didn't mention is that there may be enforcement through social sanction or even criminal penalties (Sumptuary Laws) that mandate what clothing (or other adornment) can be worn or must be worn by specific groups. Note that even in cosmopolitan societies it can still a crime to wear certain types of clothing; for example, wearing a police uniform when you are not actually a law enforcement officer.

"Part of what made vid-gaming so incredibly addictive for me was growing up in a very drab business-oriented environment where everyone was expected to wear a uniform for their job role. The ability to customize characters with hundreds of outfits and designs to escape from that drudgery was an incredible boon, to say the least.":

Every workday is Halloween for me, I refuse to wear a work uniform, but chose to put on my work costume. I got lucky at work our work uniforms are all black, which isn't too bad for someone into Goth music. For me computer games let me dress however I want without dying from the heat. Another advantage is clothing in games is much cheaper than real clothing, and quicker to change, they don't fade or wear out or need washing.

So with the reasons for clothes at least discussed, how would it affect the different planets and primary races? (All imo of course)

Sun

Protection: Low/No impact
As life in the sun is exclusive to the climate controlled bubble cities protection from the elements is of no concern to the clothing styles in use around the sun.
The clothes from visiting Efreet would need to be fireproof, but that is more a choice of materials than style

Utility: Low/No impact
As above as everyone is confined to climate controlled cities there is no special need for extra utility besides the usual like pockets to hold your communicator, etc.
And if the life support fails no different clothing style would safe you. The only protection would be magic which would not affect the design of clothes as all

Decoration:
What makes the sun special is that it is a contact point with Efreet, so you would likely see a unique fusion of Efreet and Pact world styles here which then might get exported to other planets.

Identity: Higher impact
The bubble cities are fairly cosmopolitan but also self contained, so probably each city would develop its own style mainly dependent on the racial makeup of the city.
Another factor is religion. With the sun being such a important symbol there will be many religious groups (not only Sarenites) which will influence the design of clothes. So unless you have a more party like religion it will likely result in a overall more conservative and traditional style

Aballon

Protection: No impact
Like with the sun there is no special protections needed in the climate controlled megaplexes. That is especially true as the main species are machines which are not as affected by environmental dangers anyway.

Utility:
As the planet is highly networked it might be that clothes worn on Aballon are itself networked to make it easier for Anacite to interact with other people instead of having to rely on facial recognition.

Decoration:
With Anacites probably not having much of a fashion sense and the megaplexes being full of people you probably have two general lines of clothes. One for the people who want to go with the masses in machine grey and another line for people who want to stand out with lots of colour.

Identity:
Anacites do not have a divided society among different countries (and also no need for clothes) so most clothes will be imported from the outside. So depending on how assimilated the immigrants they will probably wear the clothes from their former home.
While Anacites likely have no trouble recognizing each other (exchanging ID codes or whatever), interaction with other species are probably a bit more problematic. Anacites might not be all that well versed with recognizing biological species as facial recognition is a bit processor intensive and biologicals will have no idea how to recognize Anacites (there is even a adventure where a Anacite pretends to be a maintenance robot). So especially the Anacites which come into frequent contact with biologicals might "wear" markings so that others might recognize it.

Anacites:
As said above, Anacites likely do not even wear clothes but limit themselves to painted or even etched on markings. Although some vain ones might even mod their bodies with more stylish parts.

Androids:
Androids are the middle ground between Anacites and biologicals. That puts them into a position where they either embrace their biological side dressing like other species or their robotic heritage, limiting themselves to markings and as little clothes the local decency laws allow for.
Although some machine/biological fusions might also appear.

Castrovel

Protection:
With the planet being both hot and humid the clothes will be rather lose and allow the skin to breath. Although considering how dangerous the planet is protection from attacks might actually be something which affects normal clothes (and don't forget protection from insects). So depending on how threatened the city is you might see rather lose clothes for comfort or some thicker ones for protection.

Utility:
As mentioned, dinosaurs and insects are a problem, so clothes might be designed to deter them subtly, for example with colors and patters they tend to not react to or even scented accessories (or things like subsonic generators) to keep insects away.

Decoration:
Nothing really special here. As the Lashunta tend to be rather ecologically minded it might push them towards more natural fabrics instead of synthetics.

Identity:
With each city state being very independent each one would likely have their own styles. As would the local elves which would vary considerably from those of the Lashuntas as they are rather isolationist. So it could be you would have periodically "elven styles" sweeping the planet after some form of televised diplomatic interaction exposed the greater population to elves.

Lashunta:
Lashunta have a very strong sexual dimorphism so both sexes/subraces certainly will have very different clothing styles with very few unisex clothes existing.

Absolom Station

Protection: Low impact
Again a climate controlled artificial atmosphere so there is no need for clothes to have special protections.

Utility:
Also no special considerations. Absolom is a 3 dimensional environment, but that is nothing which affects clothes.

Decoration:
No special considerations either. You will have the usual clothing cycles with varying styles.

Identity:
As humans seem to consider Absolom Station theirs they will likely wear their own clothing styles instead of adapting alien designs. Both with its low population different styles will mostly be along social roles and not according to where they live.
As gangs are a bigger factor on Absolom you will likely have "gang colours", although that will not affect the overall cloth design unless one or more gangs adopt a specific manufacture as their gang brand with the manufacture being left with either trying to distance themselves from them or leaning into it.

Humans:
Nothing much to say here. Humans are humans.

Akiton

Protection:
Akiton is hot and dry, so local clothes will reflect that. That often means traditional desert clothes to keep the wearer cool

Utility:
More expensive clothes might even include an build in cooling system like some liquid tubes woven into the clothes. High end travelling clothes might include water reclamation systems, although truly effective systems are probably the area of armor addons than just clothe options.

Decoration:
Decoration is likely second to utility, meaning that colours will be bright to reflect more light.
Also remember that the gravity on Akiton is a lot lower. That means heavier clothes still feel quite light, at least for offworlders, and might even be designed that way to prevent muscle atrophy

Identity:
Each city state will of course have its own identity, but if that reflects in the worn clothes depends on if they even have a clothing industry or rely on imports. So you will likely end with a big mix of basic local clothes and imported offworld clothes which indicates status.

Ysoki
Ysoki are practical people from a world that rewards practicality so that will likely affect their clothing choice. Keep in mind that practical does not mean bland. Practical clothes for a diplomat or merchant are anything but. So they will likely have a specialized wardrobe for their profession, even apart from uniforms and work clothes, and one for social gatherings.
Pockets might not be all that needed as all Ysoki have their pouches. Although some pockets would still be good for items that should not get wet. And maybe some flaps to wipe things they pull out of their pouch dry (or clean them before they put them in).

Verces

Protection:
As only the central band is inhabited there is very little differences in what kind of environmental protections are needed across the whole planet. Although there might be some differences on the east-west axis with clothes more on the sun side being lighter while on the frozen side they are heavier and maybe also more reflective and brighter because of the twilight conditions.

Utility:
As mentioned above, not only are the weather conditions rather static depending on where you are but also the light condition. That might influence the colors in use.

Decoration:
Verces is a highly developed world, so you can expect a living clothing industry interested in cycling through as many styles as possible.

Identity:
While the cultures on Verces are known to be rather homogenous you will still have different styles across the ring. The split between tech Augmented, Pure Ones and God-Vessel certainly has an effect on clothes with designs exemplifying the allegiance to one side which is worn be the more hardcore followers.

Verthani
As Verthani can precisely alter the color of their skin and several of their subcultures depend on showing of their skin, especially the God-Vessel, many Verthani might resort to wear little or transparent clothes and rely on their skin for most of the decoration and to declare their allegience/identity.

Shirren
Having an exoskeleton might mean that Shirren require a little less clothes than others, although it does not offer any special protection so they can't go without like the Anacites can, especially as in many cases they do not live in controlled environments.
As Shirren have 3 genders it could mean that they have also have 3 gendered clothing styles.

Idary

Protection: Low impact
Another controlled environment, although as the Idari contains multiple biomes some adaptions are needed depending on where you want to go.

Utility:
No special consideration

Decoration:
While the Idari was designed as a colony ship and thus has some amenities it likely dos not have much of a clothing industry. That doesn't mean that it can't produce new clothes, but the fashion cycles will likely much slower, if they happen at all.

Identity:
Clothes likely differ along cultural groups, mostly military or religious ones. But generally the people are rather homogenous as will the clothes.

Kasatha
While they have some biological differences from most other species with their 4 arms this is not much of a problems for designers. They do seem to be rather traditional people so they will likely only slowly adopt trends from other species, if at all.

The Disapora

Protection:
With most of the population centers being asteroids and other settlements most atmospheres are controlled, not requiring special protection. But unlike the other similar entries many of those will be more precarious and the chance of system failures are higher. So regional clothes might incorporate some form of vacuum protection.

Utility:
As written above, unless you are on a Star Citadel the danger of life support failure is there. So apart from some form of environmental seal many clothes might also include magnetic boots and thinks like that.

Decoration:
With so many different settlements occupied by different people there will be a lot of differences in how those people decorate themselves. Although most will be limited by the ressources the settlement has or what they manage to import (or "import" in the case of pirates). While UPB crafting will allow you to create any style you want it doesn't mean that each settlement has someone who can do that and is also a good designer.

Identity:
Identity likely comes more from what each settlement has available than from a conscious decision. Although some more organized pirates might adopt some kind or recognizable style, not only for prestige reasons but also to let others know not to mess with them.

Eox

Protection:
While Eox certainly requires protections, they are more in the line of actual armor instead of clothes. And inside the city states you likely have a controlled atmosphere.
It doesn't help that most people on Eox are undead and do not require protection from many things clothes can handle

Utility:
No special considerations I can think of.

Decoration:
While the population of Eox are undead that doesn't mean that they do not have a fashion sense. Even lowly ghouls might wear some form of decoration, even if just to show that they are still sapient and not some mindless ghoul plaguing the planet.

Identity:
With the power structure on Eox being what it is the difference in clothes is likely among social lines with the bone sages being decked out with the most luxurious things they can find with their direct underlings not being far behind.
But the lower the social letter you get the less glamorous clothes get while the bottom strata, especially among the undead, clothes being optional or just scraps.

Triaxus

Protection:
Considering the extreme climate of Triaxus the clothes will definitely reflect the current season, meaning either lose jungle or desert clothes (depending on humidity) or, with the current season, heavy winter clothes if your species requires it.

Utility:
No real special requirement. When it is close to a season change you might see multi purpose clothes which can be adapted, but usually seasons are so long that it is not needed to make them.

Decoration:
As important as everywhere else and with so many different industries on the planet you will likely have a lot of options of styles. Considering that most dragons are rather vain in the Drakelands you will likely see more obvious jewelry than in other regions (sometimes in the case of dragon and maybe dragonkin as only form of clothes)

Identity:
Triaxus has a lot of different groups which means expressing your identity becomes much more important. Each city state likely has its own style while the landbridge between the continents has a long military history which influences the clothes there. And as dragons tend to be a bit possessive it is likely that each dragoncorp has their own uniform or corporate style.
And there is of course Ning which always does its own thing.
That means you will likely have a lot of different styles on the planet, but instead of mingling they stay separate (unless the Dragoncorp deals in fashion, but even then the corporate style will likely be independent from the commercial style)

Ryphorian
Are essentially humans so there are no special consideration there. There might be some differences in clothes for winter or summerborn though especially when it comes to protection from the elements.

Dragonkin
Like real dragons might not even wear clothes, or just as little as to fit in the bigger society. Instead their needs for decoration and expression of identity can be met with jewelry or paint/tattoo markings. Getting the same tattoo as their bond partner or otherwise indicating that in their choice of clothes/jewelry might be a trend.

Livara/Bretheda

Protection:
On both worlds you have controlled environments so no special considerations needed except maybe avoiding lose items like hats as it might get a little bit windy from time to time.

Utility:
Nothing which would influence regular clothing. Work clothes might include a parachute or other slow fall device to hope for rescue before reaching crush depth, but that tends to be too bulky for

Decoration:
Most clothes, or at least their styles, will likely be imported as the Barathu have no real need or option for clothes. They might be able to wear some form of jewelry though.

Identity:
The ability of the Barathu to split and merge likely means that they have a completely alien concept of identity which is hard for others to understand. And with their nonhumanoid physique most species will have a hard time identifying a Barathu on sight, so mostly for their benefit they might start to wear some identifying marks, although those will likely not come in the form of clothes.
Non Barathu likely identify with different corporations and other groups and get their clothes from them

Apostae

Protection:
Climate controlled, so technically no requirement there, but Apostae is a dangerous place so many clothes might incorporate some form of armor or other protection

Utility:
Apart from armor gadgets which detect poisons, etc. might be popular, although those likely do not work against professional assassins.

Decoration:
Because of the top down ruling style on Apostae the decoration will likely vary wildly by social status with the upper echelons wanting to display wealth and power (which often comes from the shadows) openly. So that likely means very expensive but unassuming suits and expensive accessories recognizable by those in the know instead of wearing a christmas tree full of jewels.

Identity:
House identity is very important, not only to show your own allegiance but also to let others know not to mess with you. As such each house will have their own quirks of dressing, but likely do not wear a completely different style.

Aucturn

Protection: Yes
Aucturn is hostile so even in a controlled environment most clothes will include protections like air filters and likely cover as much skin as possible while still being comfortable.

Utility:
As mentioned above clothes will likely include many protection devices if not outright environmental seals.

Decoration:
Without much of an industry there are probably not many options to decorate yourself. And with how lawless the planet is sticking out or even openly wearing expensive accessories invites trouble. So this is probably avoided except by very powerful people (or people who want to appear that way)

Identity:
As the planet is controlled by a cult, much clothing will be religious (as in not very stylish or colorful, at least with those cults). Styles might differ according to religious branch or function.

On the matter of Anacites, they do have at least one major cultural/religious split which could manifest itself in "clothing": Those Who Become vs Those Who Wait. Granted, it'd probably be less clothing and more "decorative and stylistic features to one's external shell", but it'd function the same way.

Also, the Lashunta dimorphism technically isn't sexual; Koratha and Damaya come in both male and female. My own take? While Lashunta do have clothing which varies across both their gender and their morphism, its so diverse across the different cultures and city-states that its functionally indistinguishable from "no clothing dimorphism" to anyone who isn't an expert on Lashunta culture.

Some other areas of fashion we haven't covered yet what about age, this could get really interesting for a race that has extremely long life spans, and age is an important status symbol. Maybe their fashion grows more complex over time.

How you keep up your armor could be a big cultural fashion statement too, Some might want their armor shined up and in good repair, while others want it to look all beat up and battle-scarred to show off.
