Doctor Gorilla

Rules Discussion

I finally got around to playing a 2e adventure path after playing 1e for so one. Playing as a Jekyl / Hyde type. Scientist with alchemical crafting, animal instinct barbarian (ape) at level 1. Going to take medic dedication and battle medicine at level 2.

I get that battle med during a rage isn’t an issue as far as concentration is concerned, but something else is tripping me up: the manipulate trait.

I have a free hand. In fact, I have two. But thanks to the morph trait that comes with animal instinct rage, I have two very large, gorilla hands.

Manipulate says: Creatures without a suitable appendage can’t perform actions with this trait.

So that is my question. Are gorilla hands considered “suitable” for healer’s tools? Do I need to buy a specialized set for when I’m raging so I don’t smash them?

Shadow Lodge

This is a "GM's call" sort of thing, so you'll have to ask your GM how it will be ruled...

I am not seeing anything in Animal Instinct, Bestial Rage, or the Morph or Transmutation traits that say that you can't continue to make manipulate actions.

Also it would be unfair to forbid Ape, Bear, and Cat from using manipulate actions, but still allowing it for Bull, Deer, Frog, Shark, Snake, and Wolf.

It reminded me of the gorilla from the original ghostbusters.

I agree with breithauptclan. Moreover, there are polymorph abilities (like battle forms, for example) that specifically mention not being able to use manipulate actions. Trying to shoehorn that into other abilities that don't mention it on some arbitrary notion of what feels like it should be able to use said actions or not seems punishing.

Also, I'd like to point out that the manipulate trait is on a LOT of things in the game. I would hope your DM doesn't feel as though having an ape fist attack keeps you from doing anything that requires an interact action (which has the manipulate trait), which includes everything from drinking a potion or drawing a weapon, to even something as simple as opening an unlocked door.
