Focus spells: Good idea with some bumpy spots

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

If I understand correctly, focus spell feats seem to fall into two categories:

  • Those that you can take without taking any other focus spells (for a Ranger "Gravity weapon" or "heal companion" and grant you 1 focus point
  • That that require you have taken a prior focus spell (e.g. Animal Feature) and grant an extra focus point (up to 3).

    My issue:
If you take 2 of the first type, you still only have one focus point. Why? Just seems like a weird penalty for taking a lower-level ability.

  • There's some rule somewhere that any focus spells that would grant a pool when you already have one just add a point to your pool instead. I don't know if there's another rule that clarifies you get a pool from a feat that just tells you it gives a focus point, or if that's a homebrew rule I saw somewhere...it should really be that simple, though, for a system that caps at 3.

    Sorry this is a dup.

    There isn't.

The rule you saw is that if you gain a focus spell and don't have a pool of points, you gain a pool of 1.

You only gain an extra point if the feat says you gain an extra point.

Page 302 of the CRB, Focus Points From Multiple Sources says:

"For instance, if you were a cleric with the Domain Initiate feat, you would have a pool with 1 Focus Point. Let’s say you then took the champion multiclass archetype and the Healing Touch feat. Normally, this feat would give you a focus pool. Since you already have one, it instead increases your existing pool’s capacity by 1."

If you get it from a different source (there is some debate about what this means, whether different feats are different sources or only ones outside of your class) then it increases your focus pool.
