Roll20 Token Positoning

Advice

Grand Lodge

This is my second question regarding Roll20 here, but I could not find another more applicable forum. If there is a "better" board for this, please let me know.

I have noticed that many/all of the pre-built small tokens in the library center in the middle of a square, but if I make my own tokens small, it shifts them to the upper left corner of the square. Does anyone know how to format a token to be centered in the square when it is smaller than a full square?

You could always ask on the Roll20 forums.

The Roll20 grid defaults to 70px per square of the grid. Assuming you haven't changed those settings on your map, then your token should be 70x70px for a Medium creature.

(You can use a larger image for a clearer token, but then you have to work the proportions.)

If you want a smaller token, but still have it sit centered on the square of the grid, simply make an image of the smaller token (I recommend 35x35px for a tiny creature and 52x52px for a Small token. Then, in your art program of choice, set that image to the center of a 70x70px canvas with a transparent background. Save the entire 70x70px image (essentially a large image of a small token surrounded by lots of empty space).

If your token has a border of some kind, and you want to maintain visual consistency, don't let the border width shrink when you reduce the token size. For example, if you had a 70px token with a 4px stroke border, when you reduce the token to 35px, make sure the stroke border is still 4px wide, not 2px wide.

Upload your token to Roll20 just like you would any other. The transparent background will still be clickable, but will be invisible, making the token look centered on the square.

Alternatively, hold down the alt key when dragging and dropping your token to avoid the snapping to grid.

I hope that helps.

I second the later suggestion of using the "alt" key to adjust position of tokens when necessary. I do this on occasion when the map I'm using doesn't always correspond to the square grid overlay that Roll20 projects on maps. Even adjusting the grid placement doesn't deal with all possible irregularities on a map.

And it will work fine for juggling the placement of smaller critters.

If the smaller critter is a PC, you'd be best advised to follow Ravingdork's first suggestion, centering the tiny PC's token in the square. Although... leaving a smaller token in the corner would work well for those occasions when the tiny PC is sharing space with a larger pal.
