Selfish Shield !

Rules Discussion

Hello all,

Quick question, is the Desecrator Champion’s reaction, selfish shield, “resistance all” or something else?

Thanks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I mean, it does exactly what it says it does. It gives you resistance "against the triggering damage." Not "against the triggering damage type(s)." This is abnormal for resistance, but it matches what the text describes. After all, feats often break general rules.

Nowhere does it mention giving you resistance to a damage type (or multiple types for that matter), but rather the damage itself, "regardless of type." So if you're asking how this would function when a single source deals multiple damage types, then I'm fairly confident the resistance will apply once to the entirety of "the damage".

Also, remember, under resistance rules we have the following:
"If you have more than one type of resistance that would apply to the same instance of damage, use only the highest applicable resistance value."

So, even if you have resistance to part of the damage and use this ability on top of that you can't reduce the damage dealt by more than the higher of the 2 resistance values. However, you can still benefit from this resistance being untyped in a situation like the following:
Say you use selfish shield on an attack that does 3 slashing damage and 4 fire damage, and you're level 6. You would gain resistance 5 against the triggering damage and take only 2 damage total instead of 3 if it was simply resistance to fire damage... At least, that's how it reads to me.

It is something else.

Resistance All is much more pronounced in the Good Champion reactions compared to this. Sadly, this makes Desecrator much worse of a reaction compared to even a shield, but when you can have a shield-like effect without a shield, it's not the worst thing. There are far worse reaction abilities, but being able to stack the defensive reactions can make you a relatively functional tank.

Thank you for the input!

I'm not sure you can stack them though, can you? I understood that as falling under the "no activating multiple reactions in response to a single trigger" rule.

If there is something about it I'm missing I'd love to know, because I like NE champions, and was kind of saddened by this one's implementation.

Shield Block and their reaction have different triggers.

There's builds that let you take advantage of it.

Take Bastion dedication for Quick Block by 10th, and the Quick Shield Block feat from Champion, plus Divine Reflexes at 14th, so you can have 2 block reactions, 1 champion reaction, and 1 general reaction.
