Spell Focus

Rules Questions

Why SPELL FOCUS isnt a Metamagic Feat, while Weapon focus is a Combat feat?
Since only afects only spells, there is no logical in it.
A spell caster should be in the position to spend a metafeat on it.
And there is more logical in put weapon focus in general feat category than spell focus in general feat.
Since each class have a weapon skills, but one feat that only affects spells and magic,

There is no Spell Focus feat in Pathfinder Second Edition, so I assume you must be speaking of First Edition. First Edition was discontinued a couple years back, so it is what it is at this point. There isn't going to be any reprinting or errata.

But, as always, if you are running a homegame, feel free to adjust whatever rules you think will enhance your games.

Some feats are general, meaning that no special rules govern them as a group. Others are item creation feats, which allow characters to create magic items of all sorts. A metamagic feat lets a spellcaster prepare and cast a spell with greater effect, albeit as if the spell were of a higher spell level than it actually is.

Spell Focus is a general feat, therefore requiring no special rules.

Metamagic feats change spells to a different level & effect.

Metamagic Feats

As a spellcaster’s knowledge of magic grows, he can learn to cast spells in ways slightly different from the norm. Preparing and casting a spell in such a way is harder than normal but, thanks to metamagic feats, is at least possible. Spells modified by a metamagic feat use a spell slot higher than normal. This does not change the level of the spell, so the DC for saving throws against it does not go up. Metamagic feats do not affect spell-like abilities.

Let's see:

- Spell focus doesn't allow you to cast a spell in a different way;
- Preparing a spell that benefits from Spell focus isn't more difficult;
- A spell that benefits from Spell focus doesn't require a higher spell slot;
- Spell focus decidedly changes the DC of the affected spells.

I would say that Spell focus clearly isn't a metamagic and isn't meant to be one, as it fails all the tests.

The designation of a feat being a combat feat is only important to fighters. The bonus feats a fighter gets have to be combat feats.

Classifying spell focus as a metamagic feat would actually cause a lot of problem. For one it would cause all spontaneous casters to have to take a full round to cast any spell affected by spell focus. It would also mean that it would not apply to spells cast with a staff. Wizards would no longer be able to apply it to spells cast using their arcane boned item. There are probably a couple more things that would get screwed up by treating spell focus as a metamagic feat. Treating spell focus as a metamagic feat actually weakens the feat considerable and other than a wizard being able to choose it as a bonus feat it would gain nothing.
