Does the flaming weapon shine like a torch?

Rules Questions

Hi everyone!
Does the flaming weapon shine like a torch?

Yes, in description of flaming ability we can't see any word about shine or a light. But... It's look like a cazus: fire without light...
I can't find any answers on this question... Maybe somebody help me? =)

The quantity of light emitted can be different depending on the weapon (2 handed sword vs dagger), but the weapon is sheathed in fire, not simply searing hot. That fire has the normal properties of a fire.

Are you saying that a one-handed sword with a flaming ability shines like a torch (20ft)? Two-handed maybe a little more (25ft)?

*sorry for my English =)

Yes, and a mace or a dagger too. Even if the flaming area is smaller, the burning part of a torch is not larger.

I am Italian. ;-)

Rules as Written (RAW). No. But I would use it that way. Giving it a small boost isn't bad.

Note that a flaming weapon gives out the same light as a torch, it is a secondary effect of the flame, not a magical light, so any magical darkness stops it.

Light Generation: Fully 30% of magic weapons shed light equivalent to a light spell. These glowing weapons are quite obviously magical. Such a weapon can’t be concealed when drawn, nor can its light be shut off. Some of the specific weapons detailed below always or never glow, as defined in their descriptions.

just let it use that. same difference

I like Diego's take. A common sense ruling that has a RAW defense.

Personally, I find all the rigid categorization of MAGICAL things makes them less MAGICAL. A sword that is wreathed in emerald fire and one that glows as if fresh from the forge could have the same general rules but still allow for a few niche bonuses/drawbacks, and they are very different in terms of theme or tone. But. This, basically by definition, cannot be covered in the rules.

Absolutely not, it:

Thanks for all answers! =)

An alternative use for a flaming sword:

In "Valerian and the Heroes of Equinox", an old cartoon by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières there is a great illustration where one of the heroes uses his flaming sword as a fire to roast a piece of meat, and complain to the intelligent sword that he wanted a moderate fire.

:-)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In a 3.0 campaign there was a rogue who avoided melee like the plague (as he felt vulnerable and ineffective), so I put in a +1 flaming rapier to get him involved.

Did he fight with it? Did he heck. He used it to light campfires, commit arson, intimidate people and set fire to webs.
