Mature companion Size

Rules Discussion

Quick question

Is the companion forced to increase its size if its current size is small or medium?

If so, will a small creature always be required to ride a large companion then?

For example, a gnome will probably start with a medium companion to ride ( regardless the fact it has the mount trait or not ), then by taking the mature companion feat he will be forced to ride a large one.

Is it just me or seems that there's no possibility for a small creature to just have a medium riding companion ( if not by taking an animal and not a companion, or by stop taking companion feats, getting a non mature companion almost useless in terms of fighting and supportive stuff ).

Liberty's Edge

I don't know of anything that allows a choice in the growth of an animal companion when it becomes mature.

The rules on page 214 are pretty clear that a mature animal companion grows by one size if they are medium or smaller.

This is something that a GM could change for their game.

I went to go link you the Riding Pony, and then realized that it, too, is forced to grow Large when it becomes Mature.

That is a bit silly.

So I suppose your only option is to trade your immature Medium Companion for a Mature Medium Companion (like Pony => Dog).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yep, you can't keep the same type of companion as Mediums get forced into Large. So you need to swap to a Small one that can stop at Medium.
Really a bummer if you want a consistent theme, a lifelong friend, or the Mount ability.*

*I believe a Goblin with a Wolf can pull this off, only due to an Ancestry feat, not the system as a whole.
