A player of mine loves to have family, so he decided to have his mother and sister incorporated into the first book. Now, I'm not sure if I missed it or if he changed his mind at the last second, but at our first session, the set-up changed from 'my mom and my sister are coming with me' to 'my sister is with me. My mom is already there!'
When he said that during the session, I asked him if he was sure. "You could have your mom with you..."
"Nah, we'll meet here there."
Well, uh, as most people who are reading this know, the people from the first wave are gone. I only know of two survivors.
Since I was only planning on running book one right away (giving another GM a break), I'm not really sure what to do about mom. I think the other survivors are found later, but I'm not really sure. One blurb did mention kidnapped colonists in book 3 (I think), but that could be your current group.
So, please, if anyone has an ideas, I'm open! I'm fine with just killing mom, if that's where the AP goes, but I think it's more interesting to keep hope alive. I just know I can't hand her over now because she'd know too much.

You're pretty much right. All but 2 of the colonists have disappeared, not to be found until book 3. What happened to them is a major mystery.
Personally, I'd keep it as is. Makes the mystery of what happened personal.
Or (if the mom is reasonably a character with some class levels) you could make mom the person who is found at the end of the first book. Would add lots of angst to the situation :-)
But it would be a MAJOR change to have anybody other than those 2 NPCs survive book 1 to be found.

I agree keep her/them missing.
It is a weakness of the AP, that the whole issue of where did the first wave of colonists go, is ignored for all of the 2nd book. The characters are invested in finding the missing people. The colony would be on edge. Yet the go on a resource hut/diplomatic mission/explore the island jaunt. The final big boss is a red herring who they can fix on, but the process of getting there is ignores the missing people.
Having said that, my table is loving the AP just starting Book 4.
