Companion / Minion Question

Rules Discussion

(So, Paizo, if you're reading this please. PLEASE. layout your future books better. I that's my only complaint about your 2e - I think it's really hard to find information as things you'd think would all be grouped together are scattered all around)

Is there ever a point/level of advancement at which an animal companion can act without being commanded or am I just imagining that? (Or confusing PF2e with 5e?)

For rangers, druids, cavaliers and beastmasters its when they are mature, for champions its when they are nimble or savage. They get one action to stride or strike with, except ranger animal companions who can only stride towards or strike the ranger's hunted prey.

Animal Companions (AC) and Familiars are detailed starting on page 214 of the CRB.

For when ACs gain their abilities, that is detailed in the class that gives access to the animal companion or familar because the character will likely need to take a feat that allows the animal companion to gain new abilities.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

The first advancement for AC is mature and is usually a 6th level feat. This is where the AC gains the ability to take 1 action without direction and different classes define what that action can do. The next advancement, called Incredible Companion, is Nimble or Savage and is usually a 10th level feat.

Personally, for me, it makes more sense for it to be a unified mechanic but I also get that limits your ability to make variations.

Does this mean that a mature AC belonging to a druid can: act and then still receive the benefit of the "command an animal" action?

Nevermind, answered it mah self.

This comes up a lot as a complaint, but it was stated early on that it's by design.

If the Core Rulebook reprinted every rule half a dozen times throughout the book, it'd be a thousand pages.

Instead, this is the first issue of a Paizo product with Ctrl+F and the new SRD as the focus.

More people read digitally and search for what they want than read the book cover-to-cover.

Horizon Hunters

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is that Familiars can get the Independent ability at any level. This was added in the APG so it's easy to miss.

It does take one of your daily familiar abilities though, so it may not be useful depending on the circumstance.

If the layout is not satisfactory to readers, it is good to know about it so that it can be improved in the future.
