Final Fame Purchases - Questions

Scarab Sages 4/5

As the clock winds down for spending any Fame that we acquired before it was removed, I've run into some questions about how to do so. I know that I just record the purchases on my chronicle. Questions are:

What requirements do I use for the Tiers? Tier 3 previously required 50 Reputation, and Tier 4 required 90. Now, 50 reputation would still be "liked" and 90 would be "admired."

If I use the new categories, how does that affect the All -Factions Boons?

Do I use my current Reputation or my Reputation at the time that the Season 2 guide was released? Meaning I have a character who had 80-ish reputation when the guide released, but is now over 90. Can he purchase a Master Hireling (if he has enough fame from before Paizocon)?

If I purchase a Hireling with Fame now, can I upgrade the Hireling with Achievement Points later? Or will the system reject the purchase if I haven't already purchased a Hireling Boon through the Achievement Point system?

And I'm unlikely to want to do this, but if I purchase a boon that requires completing additional tasks (like Off-hours Study), can I complete those after Dec 31st as long as I have purchased the boon before then?

Thanks.

This is my big question, too, since all of my characters utilized Hirelings.

I would not use the new reputation tiers when making purchases with fame because fame is for year 1.

Just use year 1 standard to make fame purchases using the rules found in the year 1 guide.

Use the old Tiers. The All Factions boons work the same way.

Current Reputation.

You can upgrade it later, the AcP system doesn't have the capability to check for previous boons purchased.

You can tick the boxes as long as you bought the boon before the deadline.

Thanks Alex!!!

One final question, do we need to have these purchased noted on a chronicle with a date prior to 12/31/20?

You should note them on your last chronicle before the deadline, yeah.

Thanks, Alex! That’s a huge help.

Posting this here, since we got a couple of answers last time. As people are spending their fame for the new deadline, some confusion has come up around the Professional Hireling Boon. It states:

Professional Hireling wrote:

When you gain this boon, select one Hireling boon you possess. The selected ally adds a second Lore skill to the list of skill checks they can attempt. In addition, select one skill feat whose prerequisite is being trained in one of the hireling’s selected skills. The hireling gains the benefits of that skill feat when attempting skill checks.

Special You can purchase this boon multiple times. Each time you purchase this boon, you must apply its benefits to a different Hireling boon.

The bolded section is the source of the confusion. Does that mean one skill that has, in its prerequisites entry, "trained in Crafting" or something similar for a different skill, or does it mean any feat that is associated with some level of proficiency in a skill?

For example, with Medicine, can an Expert Hireling (required before selecting Professional Hireling) have Continual Recovery, which lists as its prerequisite, "expert in Medicine?"

The confusion is around whether the boon is meant to limit choices to only the lower level/lower proficiency feats, or if it's meant to limit choices to feats associated with a skill for whatever proficiency level the Hireling has. This would let you take a feat that requires Expert, or possibly even wait to get Professional Hireling until after you have Master Hireling and take a feat that requires Master proficiency.

I read it as having the required level proficiency in the skill. If the hireling was only trained they could not take a skill feat that requires them to be expert.

In your example I think you are OK for a Professional Hireling to take Continual Recovery if the hireling also has the Expert Hireling boon. The prerequisite language has been removed from the ACP purchased hireling boons. So Expert Hireling is no longer required to get Professional Hireling. However, if you don't have Expert, the hireling would be limited to Trained only.

I believe you can delay getting Professional Hireling until after getting Master Hireling so you could take a skill feat that requires Master proficiency. But doing that will delay your ability to use make the best use of the hireling. I don't have any characters with sufficient reputation in a faction to check the actual language on the Master Hireling boon.

I don't think you can delay selecting the skill feat gained by Professional Hireling because the boon language is pretty clear that the choice is made when the Professional Hireling boon is acquired.

EDIT: Just realized this was about season 1 fame. That being said, I think most of what I said remains true.

Well that’s the point of confusion. Some people read it as trained only, some read it as allowing higher proficiency skills. The bulk of that discussion is in the blog thread, so I don’t want to rehash it here. I’m just hoping this gets seen so that we can get a clarification before people finalize their fame purchases.

EDIT: Discussion mostly starts here

I am on the "allows higher proficiency skills" team depending on when Professional Hireling boon is taken.

I hadn't noticed that. Good find!

If I am not running some of the second edition characters before the Deadline, how should I log the purchase of the boons for Society play? Just put them all on my next Chronicle sheet for any second edition character?

I'd probably record them on your last existing 2e chronicle for the character, with a note of the date you spent the fame.

Alex answered that upthread. Eric is correct. Note the purchases on your last chronicle if you aren’t going to play again before the deadline. Reminder that at the time Alex posted, the deadline was 12/31, but it has been extended (just because 12/31 is mentioned in the question below).

It was extended to the end of January, so we have until this weekend to record the purchases.
