I want to have something akin to Navi or Tatl from Zelda, for the PCs to have as a traveling companion. Any ideas?

Advice

So making the companion play like a Familiar wouldn’t work, so my Sprite as a Sage Familiar wouldn’t work, but that brings me to my next point:

I don’t necessarily want something exactly like a Fairy from Zelda, rather, I want that feeling of companionship with someone who sticks with you through thick and thin, despite being so frail in comparison.

I feel like a Sprite wouldn’t work personality wise, at least, not with what I just read in Fey Revisited.

I don’t actually know a whole lot about the weaker creatures in Pathfinder, which is why I am asking for ideas here.

An idea I have for the character: I want the character to get sick, likely corrupted to evil by a curse of some sort, which will cause the PCs to have to hinder themselves to not kill their friend despite the friend not doing the same. They will have to make a great effort to fix their friend.

For example, if the companion is a Fey, they could get the Blighted Fey template, or maybe Winter Fey template.

I also plan on giving the companion class levels, but at a reduced rate, because if they stayed completely static, they would make things harder on the players, and possibly make them decide to have the companion stay behind instead of traveling with them.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Well for starters, avoid the whole "Hey! Listen!" thing, or eventually the party will want to kill the critter themselves. . . . .

That bit aside, some clarifying questions. Is this creature supposed to bond to the group, or to a single PC? Is half the hit points of a full caster not frail enough for you? How comfortable are you with house rules for this cfeature. Is it the critter or the master who gets sick?

You could just default that the critter has half level equal to hit points, as if the master had rolled 1s every time and had no Con mod.

I know you aren't looking for a Navi clone, but which aspects do you want? The fairy's frailty is a relative concept since she never gets attacked.

You might look at Wytchlights. Some of the only non swarm fine size creatures in Pathfinder. They have the glow, are a minuscule fey, and can be familiars. You might consider adding a template or two if it's too frail. If you're still willing to make this a familiar there's an archetype for familiars that lets them bond to a group. The sticking through thick and thin is kind of the point of any "pet" class feature.

If you're willing to run an NPC caster with your group just long enough to form a bond, then you could kill him off and have the familiar stick with the crew. A familiar can be treated as the same type of caster as the master at 2 or 4 levels less than the deceased character. Don't remember the exact rules, and that may be a hold over from 3.5, but it's something you can work with.

Alternatively, build any weakish fey beasty you want as an NPC with some lesser class levels. Then give it to the group as a nerfed cohort via leadership. Maybe as a singular shared group feat, or alternative quest reward.
