Armor check penalty for light armor whit which Nonproficient

Please help understand difference bertween armor check penalty for type of the armor and for the nonproficient with any type of the armor...

If PC dress light armor (except lamellar, chain shirt and few others) without feat Armor Proficiency, Light he has or hasn't armor check penalty to attack rolls and to all skill checks that involve moving?

"Any armor heavier than leather, as well as any shield, hurts a character’s ability to use Dex– and Str-based skills. An armor check penalty applies to all Dex– and Strength-based skill checks. A character’s encumbrance may also incur an armor check penalty.

Nonproficient with Armor Worn: A character who wears armor and/or uses a shield with which he is not proficient takes the armor’s (and/or shield’s) armor check penalty on attack rolls as well as on all Dex– and Str-based ability and skill checks. The penalty for non-proficiency with armor stacks with the penalty for shields."

I understood it in next meaning:
1) I've wears light armor (leather) without feat. I must take armor check penalty on attack rolls as well as on all Dex– and Str-based ability and skill checks. But armor check penalty for leather armor is 0, so my penalty = 0.
2) I've wears light armor (lamellar/leather/) without feat. I must take armor check penalty on attack rolls as well as on all Dex– and Str-based ability and skill checks. Armor check penalty for leather armor is -2, so I must take feat Armor Proficiency, Light (Combat) or find lamellar from darkleaf special material.
In other case my penalty = -2 on attack rolls as well as on all Dex– and Str-based ability and skill checks.

I'm right?

Yes, you seem to have the ACP basics correct:

  • Dex and Str based skills take an ACP, even when proficient in the relevant armor. Of course, some light armors have an ACP of 0, so this can be irrelevant (there is a reason rogues typically wear Leather Armor).
  • If you are not proficient, you take the ACP to attack rolls as well as all Dex or Str based skills. Again, if the armor has an ACP of 0, this is largely irrelevant.
  • Note that Masterwork armor reduces ACP by one, so Masterwork Studded Leather also has an ACP of 0.
  • Finally, note that classes that are not proficient in at least light armor typically have class features that clash with armor (spells that require arcane spell failure checks or special abilities that don't function while wearing armor) and these limitations don't go away if you happen to become proficient.


Slight note: Non-proficiency adds the ACP to attack rolls, and to Str/Dex ability checks, in addition to skill checks. This includes Initiative rolls (and the rare check to break down a door, etc).
