I'm planning on running the Dawn of Flames AP and I'm finding the first book to be full of holes.... For one, there is no reason for the characters to ever go to Asanatown. Taeress needs a ride to the Burning Archipelago.... Why wouldn't the characters just drop her off at the Dawnshore space station? For that matter, why does Taeress need to go there? She thinks the DCI is full of crap so why go talk to Nib about the events at Far Portal Station? The list goes on....

Not every adventure path starts with a great hook, and not every hook catches the party.

maybe imply to your players that they should make characters who are interested in exploring the sun at the start to jump this hurdle?

Yep, the beginning of the adventure is clunky. What I changed to make it work was:

  • The DCI HQ is in Asanatown.
  • The PCs are tasked with being couriers to deliver a piece of mysterious magitech from the Breath of Embers to the DCI HQ. Taeress follows along with them because she's interested in the mystery item and wants to study it in person with the other scientists at the HQ.

    I had Taeress set up a lunch meeting with Nib in Asanatown. Nib was in Asanatown doing an interview with a local news station about DCI. The interview took place while the PCs were on the linecrawler and during that time Zeylan took control of the news station and announced his coup.

    My PCs wanted to immediately visit the Brass Bazaar, which is located on the opposite side of Asanatown from Dawnshore. Basically they shared a linecrawler with Taeress with the intent to continue on to Corona, but the station locked down once they were in Asanatown.

    That's genius. If I run this again I'm using that.
