What happens if a wizard with Familiar Attunement takes the Witch Dedication?

Rules Discussion

Is the wizard familiar forcibly removed by the witch familiar? Do you still apply enhanced familiar if you took that feat? Do you have multiple familiars, but only use the abilities granted by one while the other hangs out in a pocket dimension?

Or does your wizard familiar suddenly lose one of the familiar abilities, and it says, "Actually, I'm YOUR master." ?

I don't see any guidance on this in the rules - but I am aware that any witch spell slots are granted by the familiar in question.

I'm so confused D:

I think the rules are clear that you do not have two familiars in this case.

That said, I agree the rules don't really address the issue. You can't simply disregard the witch familiar entirely as you need it to store your witch spells, but you clearly can't have two familiars...

Me, I'd combine the two familiars into ONE and you get the best or necessary parts of each, BUT not get to stack same-type abilities. By that, I mean you would functionally have a witch familiar (stores your witch spells, comes back next day if slain) with 4 familiar abilities (wizard familiar with Enhanced has 2+2=4). You don't get to add the witch familiar's one familiar ability to get 5 as I wouldn't let the same-type abilities stack - you get the better of the two (4 vs 1). This would also work with a Wizard who has the Improve Familiar Attunement thesis, as the same principles would apply. This could lead to the "SUPER FAMILIAR", a wizard with the Improve Familiar Attunement thesis who multiclasses as Witch to have a familiar that dies and comes back for free the next day - only your GM can decide if that would be abusive, but there it is.

And if this is for PFS play, good luck... you better seek a ruling from the PFS leadership or stay away from this conundrum unless you always play with the same GM (a PFS group) and that GM gives you a ruling that works for you.

Seems reasonable, but taking a single dedication to be able to play loose with your familiar seems like a significant power gain for such a low level feat. I suppose the same question would apply for Leaf Druid's who want to take a Witch Dedication as well.

Indeed, but knowing this in advance you will be able to choose a different wizard thesis.

To think in a positive way, this will give you even more versatility.

Is a 24h respawn for your familiar really that powerful? Honestly I think it would only improve the use of familiars as wizards would be less paranoid about loosing them and GM's wouldn't feel like jurks killing them.

In the game I'm playing in, something similar to this happened. I was playing a Familiar thesis Wizard and took the Witch Dedication. My GM said that I had to rebuild my Wizard a bit and choose a new thesis in order to take the witch multiclass. No problem. My familiar lost 1 ability for now, but I plan to take the Witch's "Improve Familiar" feats as I level up.
