Alchemists bombs: Can they be mixed / thrown while raging?

Rules Questions

From the alchemist class bomb description: "In addition to magical extracts, alchemists are adept at swiftly mixing various volatile chemicals and infusing them with their magical reserves to create powerful bombs that they can hurl at their enemies"

From the barbarian class rage description: "While in rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration"

I'm considering adding some barbarian to my alchemist, and I foresee the question coming up at the gaming table: "does mixing/throwing an alchemist bomb an ability that requires patience or concentration?"

I personally don't think it does, as it should/would state somewhere in the bomb description that it requires concentration to perform, but I could be convinced otherwise I suppose.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I'm thinking no, but maybe a Dreadnaught Barbarian can. It seems like you should drink your Mutagen, and Move into Melee on the first round, then Rage and Full Attack on your 2nd.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think RAW (Rules As Written) yes, but the wording is a bit open to interpretation. I'd definitely take this one to my GM.

Concentration actually has a game-mechanic, but this may not be referring to that mechanic.

Bombs are (at most) a standard action, and with Fast Bombs you can throw like 8/round eventually. I think there's even a feat or doscovery that lets you throw one as a swift action. With all that in mind "patience" doesn't seem like it factors in.

I honestly can't imagine how this would unbalance anything, so I'd allow it.

Agreed on all counts with MrCharisma.

I think the image of a cackling, half-mad pyromaniac hurling Malatovs into the fray with little regard for their own safety is pretty iconic, and the unchained barbarian's +2 to attack and damage and -2 to AC certainly fit in with that.

I'd absolutely allow it; compared to the mutagen+Enlarge Person+rage combo, this is nothing to worry about.

I like that image, too!
