Ring of X-Ray Vision - see through things up to 20' or only be able to see 20' total?

Rules Questions

The Ring of X-Ray Vision says "Vision range is 20 feet, with the viewer seeing as if he were looking at something in normal light even if there is no illumination."

Is that only seeing through objects within 20'? Or you can you see 20' total while it's active and everything beyond that is a blur\blank?

For example, if you're 10' in front of a door to a large, well lit room, can you see the full room as if the door was open, or only 10' into the room?

thanks!

Liberty's Edge

It doesn't say that ikt replace normal vision, so you get 20' of X-ray vision plus whatever you can see with your normal forms of vision.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For Reference: Ring of X-Ray Vision

You're only able to see through a few inches to feet of solid objects within that 20'. If you are able to see past 20' without looking through an opaque solid object you should be able to do so.

As an example: if you are looking at a dock littered in wooden crates and you're trying to see if any of them are hiding suspicious objects in the crates, using the X-ray vision won't prevent you from noticing the dragon attacking ships in the distance.

However, if you are using the X-ray vision to look through a wall I'd say you are limited to 20'. After all, your normal vision can't see past the wall at all. One special sense doesn't allow your non-special sense to ignore environmental effects that it normally couldn't.

The way I interpret is the ring gives a new kind of vision (like darkvision, but through stuff). Where darkvision normally has a range of 30 or 60ft, this X-ray vision has a range of 20 ft. It has an additional caveat of things that will block the x-ray vision, such as 3ft of wood or dirt.

So if you're against a wall (1ft thick), you'll see through it. On the other side of the all is a 5ft gap, which you just fine, but then there is a 3ft thick earthen wall. And your vision stops at that, because it can't penetrate the barrier.

As the others said.

Only 10' into the room.

Consider that some places might not allow you to wear such a ring, e.g. a thieves guild den or at a noble's mask ball, because the thieves don't want you to see their weapons & hidden stashes, while the noble ladies don't want to wear lead masks (or lead panties for that matter).
