At the time there weren't enough archetypes out to cover enough ground for everyone, and some of my players that were newer to RPGs were intimidated by having to learn stuff outside of their class. They were already having enough trouble trying to figure out what they wanted out of their main class, so saying "hey by the way, you also have to read every other class to figure out if you want to multiclass into them" was a bit of a tough ask. One the other hand, telling the Ranger "btw, you can do animal companion stuff and snare stuff!" had them pretty excited.
