Skill ranks for animal companions

Have a feeling I'm doing this correctly but want to make sure. I have a animal companion with a total of 9 skill ranks. The way I read and have done it is it has 9 points to put in a variety of skills. In this case three skills of three ranks.
My question is am I doing this correctly or do I pick 9 skills and get my HD in points for the 9 skills?

you have it correct, 9 points total 3/3/3 or 2/3/2/2 etc etc

Had a feeling just wanted to be sure. Ended up losing my companion tonight so have time to consider a new one or stick with the old one. 9 points doesn't give me much to work with.

nope, usually just 3 points in acro for the bonuses that gives and then the rest are situational based on your companion
