Hey all, I’m having a real block coming up with a compelling backstory for my character in an upcoming Extinction Curse game. The character is a female human fighter with archery focus. Her circus tricks will revolve around feats of marksmanship. Sort of a fantasy Annie Oakley? I chose hunter as a background. All ideas are welcome! Thank you.

The really obvious one to me, which you'll need to talk to your GM about, is if your character is new to the circus or has been around since its formation after leaving the Celestial Menagerie. The GM will have A LOT of information of who they are hopefully.
If we're talking about pre-circus life, I'd be curious how your character became enamoured enough to want to join a circus.
Some more random trivia questions might include: Does she hold Erastil in high-regard? That said, chaotic characters will tend to fair better in the AP than lawful ones. Does she enjoy hunting? Who were her parents/siblings? Did she have a prior job (keeping in mind she is level 1)?

I pictured her as being scouted by Mistress Dusklight but then leaving to join the circus due to some sort of disagreement.
I did choose Erastil as her deity, but I chose neutral good for an alignment. She might be a bit of a goody two shoes In the beginning but perhaps a move towards chaos is a part of her character arc. I suppose that would take her away from faith.
I believe she enjoys shooting more so than hunting, if I can make that distinction. She’s got a natural talent for it and thinks of it as her calling. If she can receive recognition for it all the better. She enjoys the adulation of the crowd.
I was thinking single divorced mother and several younger siblings. She hunts to supplement the family income. Open to ideas here!
No prior job I guess? To be frank I don’t know if there’s room in the build for another skill.

I'd definitely work with the GM on that disagreement with MD, because it could lead to some... Colourful interactions.
I don't think you need to consider tweaking your build to build into another job, but rather working out what your current skills may say about your past. Like, if she's good at shooting, maybe she was a hunter, scout or a guard. I tend to look at equipment and stats if I'm reaching for a backstory, as they would have to reflect upon my character.
I think her preference for shooting (like, target shooting) over hunting could be interesting to work out, including why she feels this way and how this reflects upon her Erastil faith (since that encourages hunting).

I like the idea of working out what happened with MD, thanks for that.
Yes, she was a hunter.
Well that reflects more my ignorance of Erastil than anything else. ;) Perhaps she enjoys hunting then.

She might be the daughter of a fletcher who learned a lot about how to shoot the imperfect arrows. Or how to create an imperfect arrow by trimming the feathers slightly one way or another. By trimming the vanes, she can make the arrow twirl, or fly off in a certain direction, etc.
So she gained her expertise in the backyard, with cast-off arrows that weren't true enough for her father to sell.
Good at hunting tossed bits of crockery thrown up in the air by someone.

I love that, thank you so much for the idea!
