This recently came up in a scenario we were playing, but we finished missing a Treasure Bundle and a Grand Archive player wanted to use Meticulous Appraisal to help out the party. However, they had filled all their boon slots, and:
"To gain the benefit of a boon, the character must “activate” it by “slotting” it into one of these slots. The GM will tell the players when to slot boons. Usually this will happen after the GM has given the players their initial briefing or introduction."
Now, it was ruled at the time, because there was some uncertainty, that the player would have had to leave a slot open to be able to use a Service boon, because they'd need to slot it. However, even under that ruling, it doesn't make a lot of sense, as you slot boons at the start of an adventure and there's no way to slot them at the end (unless your GM just arbitrarily tells you to slot your boons a second time...).
I think this should be obvious, but it would be good to have it explicitly stated by a Dev that Service boons can be used even when unslotted...
Note, if this *isn't* the case, then effectively most players will have one less slot available through most of their play, as dying and not being able to use Resurrection Plan just seems rather horrible...

You use Resurrection Plan at the time you purchase it and vice versa. Same with Sellback Plan, Bequeathal, and Untarnished Reputation.
They really should have the Slotless tag because they aren't slotted.
A service boon represents an instantaneous, one-time favor or action performed for your character, after which the boon is expended and grants no further benefit.
You can purchase this boon at the end of a scenario when you and your allies recovered 9 or fewer of the adventure’s Treasure Bundles.
Emphasis mine. You can't slot this ahead of time regardless of the type of boon (service) because you can't purchase it until the end of the scenario, and as a service boon, it's used as soon as it's purchased.
It can't be the intent to leave a slot open for potential service boon use because there's no rule for slotting later. You slot your boons at the beginning (usually after the briefing) and that's it. You can't hold a slot open to put in any other type of boon (general, mentor, etc) because you don't know if you'll need Sand Slide or Cryptid Scholar later on. That would defeat the purpose of the limited boon slots.

True, didn't check that the guide was using different wording than the blog post. So yup, it has the same potential problems as the fame purchased service boon.

I basically agree with everything you're saying here... I assume this is the intent, but things are worded poorly. Would be nice to have clarification around it to avoid people who might read it the other way.
