Is there anything a bard can't do if they don't use an instrument?

Advice

I'm planning a singing bard, and was wondering if there's anything I'm overlooking that explicitly requires an instrument.

Other than missing out on Maestro's Instrument, which grants a sweet Item Bonus to your Performance Spells, nothing I can think of.

Singing doesn't let you skip material components because it doesn't use a hand, but you can just use material components instead of the instrument.

Play a jaunty tune

"Says you. Doodley, doodley, doodley, doo. Bow chika, wooo oooh."

(The other three minutes of me making instrument style noises with my mouth are omitted for the sake of brevity).

Just do beatboxing and you will be fine...

Beatboxing and scatting aren't playing a jaunty tune.

LOL Myself, I looking for that sweet, sweet one handed +2 to performance checks I'd get from a horn of blasting. The 30' cone of sonic damage is an afterthought... ;P

...there are ways. Not necessarily good ways, but there are ways. It mostly comes down to the semantics of what one defines as playing, and out far out of the way you are willing to go to make the sounds (when regular singing would be far more efficient... and less painfu).

Just get a persona mask instead.

My character in pfs Preach just got that to help with his preaching. Along with the feat that adds a status bonus.

It does come down to the definition of playing, I'll agree with that.

I just don't think most people would ever use the phrase "playing an instrument" with regard to making noises with your mouth.

As I said, there are ways. The mouth doesn't have to be involved. The lungs are just bags to expel air, and the throat is the tube it passes through. When the sounds come due to hand operation, I think the term playing might apply much more.

The simplest method would be thumping the throat/chest during an exhale. The more complicated methods... are reserved for worshipers of Zon Kuthon (in which case, it would only be "jaunty" if the artist had a very specific sense of ironic humor).

And note that I realize my argument is silly. Now that I've spelled it out, I doubt i will pursue it further.

You mean like throat singing?
