Mind Thrust and Confusion seem like the top two attack spells at 4th level for Mystics. After that maybe Fear. But what about Cosmic Eddy?
On one level 4d6 damage is pretty unimpressive for a 4th level spell. The movement hindrance is nice, but with 10th plus level PCs the monsters will have a high enough CR that they'll make their reflex save pretty often and not get knocked prone. So a lot of the time the spell gets you 4d6 and half movement in an area.
I'm playing in my fist Starfinder game. What do you experts out there think of Cosmic Eddy; worth it?

Maybe? I think it depends on your team.
If you have a bull rush guy, a save debuffing guy, or a control guy on your team, there’s a lot of potential combos that would be fun and probably useful.
Thanks for the thought.
Well, the tank got chopped up last game, so we're down to two operatives, a technomancer, and the mystic (me). I guess my main doubt is whether I would ever really choose it over the Slow and Confusion spells I already have. The former slows the badguys' movement, and the latter neutalizes foes in an area.

I'm not a huge fan of Cosmic Eddy. The damage is very minor against CR9+ creatures, so you're really getting it for a chance to knock enemies prone and then slow their movement speeds briefly after they get up. If you have a couple of melee guys to take advantage of prone enemies, it could be OK. But generally its far below its other AoE control friends.
I like Slow over it by a good margin, as being staggered for multiple rounds is a death sentence. At the same spell level, I'd choose Miasma over Cosmic Eddy almost always for the area control spell of choice.

Don't forget the issue of mental immunity. Sure, Mind Thrust can nuke individual targets, but only if they aren't immune. Having attack options that work even if the enemy are undead or robots is nice.
Fair point, that. I got Force Blast (and Slow) for that very reason, and have felt kinda dumb for picking Force Blast. Part of me feels like this is just the 4th level version of the under-damaging damage spell. Still, beggars can't be choosers sometimes.

Yeah, one of the big questions I've asked myself is, "When am I really going to cast this instead of Slow."
Thanks for showing me Miasma. I only have the core rules, and didn't even know about that one.
