Is Ray a Weapon?

Rules Discussion

So in P1 I had a homebrew deity whose favored weapon was ray. Is ray considered a weapon in P2 too? Could I convert my deity to the new rules as it was before?

Off the top of my head, I don't think there's anything that uses Favored Weapon that could apply to a Ray.

No, Ray is not a weapon in PF2. You make spell attack rolls, but those are determined by your spell casting proficiency and there would be no way for a cleric to have "spell casting" as a favored weapon. In PF2, the favored weapon is very much supposed to represent a physical attack of some form. Staff or maybe dagger would be the best bet for casting focused deity.

Yeah, rays don't exist like the used to. 'Ray' is now purely descriptive, you make a spell attack roll. And since that includes proficiency bonus, which includes level, there is little reason to need something like weapon proficiency ray like there was in PF1.

Spell casters had a hard time hitting with their spells in PF1, due to poor BAB. But that problem doesn't exist in PF2. Spell casters should be on roughly the same spell casting proficiency progression as characters like the barbarian and ranger are with their weapons.
