Alter self and prehensile tail

Rules Questions

As a Tiefling with the prehensile tail trait, when I use Alter Self to take the form of a humanoid e.g. Troglodyte, can I decide to keep my prehensile tail feature?

Otherwise, if I assume a form with a prehensile tail e.g. Vanara, can I get the usage of the tail given I already possess the "prehensile tail" ability myself?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When using alter self you lose access to any and all racial features not usable in your current form. So if your current form does not have a tail capable of being a prehensile tail, then you lose the prehensile tail feature while in that form. If you however take a form with a tail capable of being prehensile (such as a Vanara) then yes, you would regain use of your prehensile tail feature.

While under the effects of a polymorph spell, you lose all extraordinary and supernatural abilities that depend on your original form (such as keen senses, scent, and darkvision), as well as any natural attacks and movement types possessed by your original form. You also lose any class features that depend upon form, but those that allow you to add features (such as sorcerers that can grow claws) still function. While most of these should be obvious, the GM is the final arbiter of what abilities depend on form and are lost when a new form is assumed. Your new form might restore a number of these abilities if they are possessed by the new form.

Awesome, thanks a lot for a great answer!
