So I'm putting together a swashbuckler build (and probably annoying those trying to help me). Anyway their primary weapon will be a 18-20 crit sword however I'd like to aquire a secondary one even if they don't use it to match the real world where swords were not always a primary weapon. I'm tossing up between a shortspear and a pick. So you have a swashbcukler what would you pick as their secondray weapon a shortspear (also somewhat ranged options though I'm thinking of a crossbow for that) or a pick?

A Trident, specifically Gozreh's. Of course, then you have to get into the discussion of whether the damage type the weapon actually deals is important or what the default entry for the weapon lists. If its the damage the weapon actually deals, take Weapon Versatility and pick whatever weapon you feel like.
I would recommend a dagger or something else thrown for ranged, because Precise Strike applies to thrown weapons too.

Well, if you go with the elven thornblade as a main weapon you can take a leafblade as a secondary. Half elves can get elven racial weapons in place of the skill focus to pick up both. Other solid choices include daggers (dueling dagger adds a bonus ac in defensive fighting for the cost of 10gp more), and morningstars and already mentioned. Another good choice is a gladius, 1d6 p or s 19-20 x2. The boarding ax is a fun secondary option that can still work with precise strike. Cestus deserves a mention as you can't be disarmed and have a 19-20 blunt weapon to boot. Kunai is a great backup because it also serves other functions (piton, crowbar, and if you read the description probably trowel as well) and it can be thrown. If you take the mysterious avenger archetype whip is a good choice. Picks arguable have some utility as well.
Sorry that's kinda a slog.

No problem about the amount of text I read a lot normally so large amounts of helpful information are generally appreciated. In this case though I'll need to say no to those weapon choices because of two reasons.
1) I'm not looking for a second weapon to actually wield just one I can carry/put on a horse that's generally useful as a maybe back up weapon (both short spear and pick or morning star allow the use of sashbuckler abilities) and fits with an actual real world concept of a primary weapon with the sword as a secondary one. I would actually use the sword but well honestly I'm half tempted by a longspear which while a bad weapon for a swashbuckler is a good weapon for a real life fighter wanting to keep the other people with pointy things away from them. Basically for this I'm looking for real world "would a fighter have this" that is not a sword than mechanically viable choice. Just something I can throw a few gold on later than stick on the horse/pony/haversack.
2) Mechanics wise you only get Swashbuckler benefits if your off hand is free (silly considering how many people wielded sword/dagger or fire gun/use sword in real world) even swashbuckler specific items like a magic glove get a specific call out as being ok to hold in your off hand and still have your abilities and the picaroon archetype that has abilities modified to allow gun/sword use still loses you half the rest if you hold the gun in your offhand while attacking with the sword.

Well it's common for a fighter to have a small weapon as a backup. A sword was in some ways a backup weapon, but you'd usually also have carried a dagger. A solid primary weapon would be a lance if you are going to be horseback. You could also look at carrying a bow. You'll have decent dex and a sword is a common switch weapon from a bow in fantasy tropes as well as in some real cultures.

Oh they'll have a dagger as well probably a dueling one for the flavour and a couple of knives for cooking work. I'm not really considering horseback adventurers in my limited experience never really seem to use them which is why I was looking at a spear instead. A crossbow is on their list of equipment though I'm not sure if I should go light or heavy, when more gold becomes available I may grab the underwater variant. I'm going with a crossbow instead of a bow because really you need to be pretty strong to use a bow effectively whereas crossbows bypass a lot of that with mechanics.

Oh I know the sword is the sidearm that's why I'm looking for a primary one like a spear even if I'll never use it due to ingame mechanics vs real world physics.
As mentioned the Swashbuckler has a serious design flaw in that if its not specifically called out i.e. certain magical favours you can't have anything in your off hand or you lose most of your Swashbuckler abilities so no two weapon fighting with a dagger. Even the archetype specifically designed to use pistols and swords has to use one or the other if they have their pistol in the offhand and the sword in the primary one then they can't use their Swashbuckler abilities (plus it gives up parry).
