Android trait - repairing nanites

Rules Questions

Hello, I have a question regarding the alternate trait for androids - repairing nanites. It reads:
Repairing Nanites: Some androids cannot prompt their nanites to aid them in any endeavor, but instead find that their nanites stitch their wounds together. The first time each day that such an android has taken an amount of damage greater than or equal to twice her Hit Dice, the nanites automatically activate, without an action. Her circuitry-tattoos glow with light equivalent to that of a torch for 1 round and she heals a number of hit points equal to twice her Hit Dice. This racial trait replaces nanite surge.

I've heard vastly different interpretations of this from different people. I'd appreciate your takes on this.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When you take damage greater than of equal to twice your hitdice, you heal for twice your hit dice and glow like a torch for 1 round.

Ex: Level 2 android has taken 4+ damage, they automatically heal for 4 damage and glow for 1 round.

Ex 2: Level 10 android takes 20+ damage, they automatically heal for 20 damage and glow for 1 round.

i think the question asked is do you need to take it all in one hit to activate, as in getting hit with an attack that deal 2Xlevel. or that the total hp damage you took is sum up at levelx2

As written it seems to mean that you should have taken twice your level in damage in one go.
Personally, I would rule that it trigger the first time that your current damage is twice or more than your level.
The first interpretation makes it way less useful. As it is a racial trait it should relatively useful.

If this is the question then the present perfect grammar indicates that it should be the latter, "The first time each day that such an android has taken an amount of damage... ", as in 'has taken up to that point'.

If it were a single attack the wording "the first time each day that such an android takes an amount of damage..." would be more natural.

Read that way, it trigger even if some of the damage has been healed.
