Catching grenades

Rules Questions

Is there a way in the rules as written to catch a grenade that is thrown at you to throw it back at the enemy who threw the grenade at you?

Thanks!

Nope. The rules do not address doing that, so it falls squarely in the category of GM adjudication whether it should be possible, and what the details of attempting it would be.

Ok thank you!! Just making sure I wasn't missing anything.

Note that in real life, throwing back grenades is a really dicey thing, and has only ever been possible at all with some grenades. I think modern grenades tend to have short enough detonators to make it practically impossible. In the future, it might be even more impossible, thanks to various types of electronic "smart fuses".

Now, Starfinder isn't realistic, nor bound by real world physical limits. So, does this mean its impossible in setting? Probably not. . . but it feels like the kind of thing that shouldn't be the default. My off-the-cuff thought would be "combat maneuver": if you beat the Reflex save of a grenade by +8, you can kick/throw it as a reaction. Feat ( Improved Return Grenade ) would lower it to +4. +8 extra difficulty feels about right for "you can do it, but only rarely and not as a standard or reliable thing". Of course, if you are a level 10 Operative and a bunch of CR 1 grunts decided to try and even the odds by tossing grenades at you, well, go ahead, enjoy the fact of your super powers. Remind them why you have a black skull with five exclamation marks floating above your head.

I'd like to see a perception check to see if you can identify where the grenade is even aimed. Even if the target is an intersection in the square you're in, figuring out where something the size of an apple is going to land in the middle of combat wouldn't be an easy task.

And if the grenade is going to land 5 or 10 feet away from you? No, no chance you're catching that thing.

It'd make a fine enough feat or houserule....

houserule, not a real rule
If the grenade lands in a square or at an intersection of a square within your natural reach, you can use a reaction to make a reflex save (DC equal to the attack roll of the grenade throw) to throw the grenade

Sounds fun and all, but I can't imagine that players would appreciate NPCs throwing back their own grenades that costed the players way more money than they're really worth. If anything I would make it a feat or cost a point of resolve, so NPCs generally won't have access to that ability.

Well, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I like the resolve point idea, but I don't want to hijack this thread.

If you want to make a post in the homebrew section, we can further refine the idea.

There really isn't much else to this thread, anyway, since the question already got answered. It sort of already is a homebrew topic starting from the third post.

While I don't plan on making a thread about it, since I don't know where I would start, but I definitely will give my 2 cents if someone else does or discusses it here.
