Ranged weapon adjacent ok?

Rules Discussion

So you are standing base to base with someone. I see no penalty to fire a bow, sling etc at them. Am I missing a fundamental piece of the ranged combat equation?

It will trigger an attack of opportunity, but not many creatures have it.

Longbows have Volley 30', which gives -2 to hit anything within 30'.

They also just do less damage than a melee weapon, both as a smaller die, and they do not get Str to damage (half Str for some).

But there is no general rule. So if you want to sling a zombie, go ahead.

There's also an ongoing discussion at https://paizo.com/threads/rzs42tb2?Flanking-with-ranged-weapons regarding if you can flank. I haven't kept up with it tho.

Where does it say in the RB that firing a ranged weapon adjacent could trigger an attack of opportunity?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The rules for attack of opportunity state:

Quote:

Attack of Opportunity Reaction

Source Core Rulebook pg. 142
Trigger A creature within your reach uses a manipulate action or a move action, makes a ranged attack, or leaves a square during a move action it’s using.
