Grab an Edge + Release action

Rules Discussion

It seems that when falling off a cliff it is almost impossible to grab an edge without a free hand (unless rolling a Crit) , but Release action is not a Reaction (unless you Ready before hand, which no one is going to do for a Release action...)

That seems a bit too strict and would mean that anyone wielding a 2 hander is pretty much screwed when he is kicked off a cliff... or am I missing something here?

IMHO, a character should be able to drop something in his hand (or release one hand on a two-handed weapon) in order to Grab an edge when falling. And in fact, he'll need both hands free when he starts Climbing back up on his next turn, unless he has a feat like Combat climber.

A strict reading of the RAW (p472) doesn't allow this. But PF2 expects DMs and players to think outside the box, so you should allow clever actions like this, especially when it can save a character's life. Falling is really nasty now.

You are not missing anything. And the fact that a crit does let you grab an edge without a free hand shows (IMHO) that the screwage is intentional.

I will say that if an update (or applicable houserule) says you can Release mid-fall, expect two-weapon warriors to reinvent the weapon cord RFSN. Dropping your weapon into a pit or over a cliff is way worse than a plain Disarm.

Successfully grabbing an edge while your cool weapon drops into a lake of molten lava has to still be a lot better than falling into it yourself. <g>

Just use a Pick as a weapon and grab the Edge with it.

If you can use a Pick to climb, then it makes sense that you could be able to stop your Fall with it.

;)

Missing the fact that probably no GM is going to disallow you from rolling to grab an edge just because you're wielding a 2-hander

Puns apart,

Quote:

Drop an Item

Source PRPG Core Rulebook pg. 188
Dropping an item in your space or into an adjacent square is a free action.

It says specifically

In your space or in a adiacent square

Which could mean that you have a decent Control in terms of where the item is going to be dropped.

Which could mean that if you forgo the decision, you could probably be able to drop the item, not knowing where it could go.

Remember also that some free actions are meant to be used even not during your turn.

Quote:
In general, speaking is a free action that you can perform even when it isn’t your turn. Speaking more than a few sentences is generally beyond the limit of a free action.

So this could definitely be a possibility.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Some actions are involuntary as well and do not use an action. Like the rules for shove, if you are shoved, you move without taking an action and do not trigger abilities which trigger off of a move action. But you still moved.

I'm not saying that dropping an item is always involuntary, but if you are falling off a cliff, I can easily see myself rulling it as such.

But not necessarily next to you or on your position. I'd say it's a DM call.
