Howdy everyone, ive been watching the tv show Startgate SG1 for the last couple months and its been awesome! But it got me thinking "what if a group of adventurers where to find a Stargate? What kind of shinnanigens could the group get up to? How would the group manage the goa'uld?" And so on.
Now, im still pondering about the difference of technologies, as this is a high fantasy game and the group would encounter high scifi tech.
What ive figured out is the starting level would be fifth. And i think having a PC that specialized in ancient language would be a good idea.

Pathfinder and D20 Modern work great together. You can also use Pathfinder/Starfinder but there will be some changes. As for the language barrier, a PC doesn't necessarily have to have Aklo or something like that, they can have the Tongues spell and/or advance translator gadgets. I think Divine Spells wouldn't work so well because once someone uses the Star Gate, they will or maybe teleported outside their deity's influence. So you may want to allow Psionics and/or Spheres of Power and/or the Occult for Divine alternatives. Psionics being more mental oriented and Spheres of Power of being a more raw tap into the Arcane/Magic Dimension. I know Psionics and Spheres of Power has healing ability since Divine Influence maybe gone. I haven't played the occult to know enough about it. Personally, I rather play Psionics which I have been a fan of since early DnD, or recently, a fan of Spheres of Power.

There is a PF book that has a lot of sci-fi tech in it so there is a fully compatible source right there.
Now I would say keep it simple; no Psionics, Spheres of Power and/or the Occult crap. As I know how broken that crap can be.
Since Stargates all work in the same dimension/plane, so I think a deity's influence will be omnipresent and divine spells would still work, i.e. look at some of the ascended ancients, they had influence over a very large area.

I think this makes more sense than the first posting did, in terms of ease. I think though,as a unique element to story telling and plot hookedness, would be that a divine Player class would have to spend a certain amount of time praying to the divine to alert their diety that "hey, im not on that planet, im on this one waaaaay over here. Help me out bro".
For arcane users, i can see the need to spending time learning the planets unique arcane weave pattern, as each planet is different.

That being said Azure, to someone with only knowledge of alternate planes and dimensions, it would effectively be just that.
After all, how many characters classes/back stories would reasonably realize they jumped to another world and not another plane or dimension? Arguably casters of the divine might via their gods. Perhaps characters that study astronomy, but I doubt your typical person would realize a shift in stars unless it was pointed out by someone with a star chart to show the change.
Until then, most every reasonable person would attribute it to a planar/dimensional shift. Even in the Stargate series, they only derived locations after analyzing the star locations at different gate locations.

I’m a big fan of Stargate, and I’ve wondered what having a gate system in a fantasy setting would be like. While there are sci-fi elements available, I think taking concepts and replacing them with fantasy elements would be equally interesting. For example, what if the replicators were arcane constructs?

I actually have a background story for a Reptoid character that plays around gate travel.
Rhax was a simple man. He has a wife, two kids and a karith, an animal similar to a horse. They lived in a lovely village outside the city and everything was just perfect. He had a good job, too. Well payed, good hours and exciting. He was a gate engineer. A high end job only the most intelligent were qualified for. It involves high levels of magi-tech and a deep understanding of the planar worlds. So far, Reptoids haven't managed to establish planar travel without standard spell casting, but Rhax was optimistic that he and the team he was leading were close to success.
One night, he was the last on site, he had another spontaneous and promising idea. He took his universal tool and started to make a few adjustments. Oh boy, did that go wrong. A bright light and a huge explosion later he found himself on a mountain plateau he had never seen before. He was even still holding his universal tool.
It took him 5 days to reach the first signs of civilization and they weren't Reptoids. Quickly he donned a disguise of what apperantly was a Human. Soon he realized he was stranded on another planet. Was it another plane, too? There was no way to be sure...
That was three years ago. First he hid in the mountains, then he started to adapt and infiltrate human society. With his marvelous engineering skills and his natural knack for subterfuge he managed to establish and equip himself more and more. The fact that swordfighting was a major sport on his homeworld also helped his survival. He knew that complete submersion into humanity was necessary if he ever wanted to get home. He had to find out what the technology level was, if there was magic and if so, how strong? Finding and winning the trust of someone who would help him turned out to be most enduring. He basically gave up on this. Humans and the other races were not to be trusted. He stayed alone. Building a network of thieves and infiltration. Maybe he could recreate his work and finish it. This was the only way back after all. He dared not to think about his family too much. The overwhelming sadness would only delay his task. He worked hard, day and night. Splitting his time between training for survival and defending himself, establishing a network of acquisition and building a new gate.
Well, until four week ago. He made the mistake of trusting humans just a little too much and now he's here. Rotting in a cell, wanted for grand theft that technically he didn't commit. Well, he did orchestra it, though.
Now he needed to get rid of this delay and get back to work! There must be someone to make a deal with...
