Homemade Martial Arts Style..

Advice

Hey all! Was making a character for a side project I am doing and while rolling up his history, came up with some interesting things that lead me to want to make my own martial arts style. This is really just me playing solo, with the exception, my wife may join in for some of it, here or there. But, as this is something new to me, wanted all of your advise. Risky proposition, yeah? hehe, I jest. Anyways here it is.

Name of Style: Iron Feathers

Prerequisites: Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Unarmed Strike, Martial Weapon (Shortsword) proficiency.

Iron Feathers Style: The basics of this style teaches you to use your shortswords for defense just as much than offense. User may add their Intelligence Modifier to their AC.

Notes: Thought about adding or Wisdom modifier, but decided against it. Thoughts?

Prerequisites: Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Unarmed Strike, Martial Weapon (shortsword) proficiency, Iron Feathers Style,Weapon Focus (Shortsword), and Weapon Specialization (Shortsword)

Bloody Iron Feathers: With each successful attack, with the shortswords, an opponent must make a Reflex save DC:20, or gain the bleed effect. This effect can stack. No penalties to stop the bleeding.

Prerequisites: Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Unarmed Strike, Martial Weapon (Shortsword), Iron Feathers Style, Weapon Focus (Shortsword), Weapon Specialization (Shortsword), Bloody Iron Feathers, Greater Weapon Focus (Shortsword), and Improved Critical (Shortsword)

Bloodied Claws of the Iron Feathers: After studying a foe for 5 rounds roll a Will save DC= Opponents AC. If successful, you double your critical range, but only with your shortswords.

Hope to hear your critiques. I realize the format looks a lot like 3.0 or 3.5. Been playing D&D since I was 12 (41 now), so I carry a little of each addition with me. Hard habits are hard to break. hehe. Thanks for any feedback or just reading it! :)

This seems like it should be in the Homebrew Section of the Forums rather than the Advice Section.

It seems like an underlying concept that multiple effects that cause Bleed do not stack where yours specifically does. That suggests that this feat is overpowered, but I haven't had a lot of experience with doing Bleed Damage. I hope someone who has weighs in.

It is not clear to me: does Bleed Damage from this Feat stack with all other Bleed Damage or only from itself?

The 3rd Feat seems redundant with Improved Critical, but does it stack with Improved Critical? If I took Bloodied Claws and Improved Critical, what would my Threat Range be?

Adding a whole stat to AC is really powerful, id advise against it.

Maybe add two weapon defense to the prereqs and let them add 1 point of int + 1 every 4 BAB

For the second feat i'd completely change it to a single point of stat damage (probably str or con)

The third one will never get used. Study for 5 rounds? Combat is over by the 5th round, usually sooner.

For the first one, you could increase the shield bonus from Two Weapon Defense or decrease the penalty for fighting defensively or maybe both.

For the second, the Reflex save is clunky and slows things down too much. How about, once per round, an opponent you've successfully attacked takes 1d6 bleed or something. No need to reinvent the wheel, here.

The third is just a mess. Doubling the threat range onto something you already have improved critical on is just not done. 5 rounds of study is too long; why not 3, like an assassin? And a will save? That should be a skill check.
Better yet, you could just say...hm. They deal damage as if one size large and you reduce your attack penalty for two weapon fighting by 2?

Just look around at stuff that already exists for ideas. Keep it simple.

Thanks all! This is why I wanted to post this here. Really like the ides you all have suggested. Wrote your suggestions down and will use them to flesh this out. @Scott, I had not even thought of it stacking with others. Would probably not allow it to stack. But, then that creates a whole mess within itself. As many of you pointed out, will certainly be rewriting the abilities. Again, thank you all!

I wouldn't be to scared of stacking bleed damage, it isn't nearly as strong as it sounds, especially when combat is over quickly, and if this is an assain style, it shouldn't last long :D

You may want to Ben consider working with your gm to make this an archtype rather then a fighting style :)
