Hey, I am not sure if I am missing something here, but how many charges can a staff hold?
The CRB states that "staves can be found in multiple versions, with more powerful versions that contain more spells and can hold more charges"
Though I can't see any indication in the entries for staves stating how many charges they have.
Anyone able to point out something I am missing?

you reacharge a staff to your highest level spell each morning.
so, if you're a 9th level caster, you recharge it to 5 charges.
Prepared casters can expend 1 spell at daily preparations to give it that many extra charges.
so, if you expend a 5th level slot, you now have 10 charges on it.
each day, the Staff reverts back to 0 charges.
The level of the staff is irrelevant to how many charges it can hold, only the level of the one preparing it matters.

The quoted sentence appears to be erroneous legacy text from before the rules changed.
A staff has as many charges as you invest it in it during daily preparations. For a spontaneous caster that's equal to your highest level of spells, full stop. For a prepared caster they get that many free charges as well, but can also invest additional charges by losing a spell slot.

Hello all,
I hope someone reads this since the original thread dates 2 years ago hehe.
In the CRB page 491 STAVES (first paragraph) says "...spells. A staff has 10 charges when created."
So I'd say this answers the very first question here, although I guess it is up to the GM if he allows more than 10 charges i.e. in my game we recently found a Staff of healing with 15 charges.
Unless there is some sort of rules update that I obviously don't know about I'll appreciate if you tell me about it.
And about recharging staves, page 492 says "...A staff cannot gain more than one charge per day and a caster cannot imbue more than one staff per day."
Now my question here (because I am playing a wizard and am planning to create staves when and if I reach the proper level.)
What defines how many charges/spell the staff uses?
Existing staves from the CRB say how many charges uses each of the spells stored. But when I create one, how do I know how many charges per spell it will spend. If it was up to me, I would obviously say 1charge/spell.
Thanks in advance if I get my question answered =)

There is errata for staff charges.
Page 592: Under Staves, change the fourth sentence to “Many staves can be found in multiple versions, with more powerful versions that contain more spells—such a staff always contains the spells of all lower-level versions, in addition to the spells listed in its own entry.” This removes the erroneous mention of holding more charges. In preparing a staff, change the second sentence to "When you do so, that staff gains a number of charges equal to the level of your highest spell slot. You don’t need to expend any spells to add charges in this way." This makes it clear how many charges you gain if you have only a few low level spell slots but have a cantrip or focus spell.

I think this is a PF1 question. You are in the PF2 forum.
