Has taking Enhanced Resistance as a Guard Soldier ruined my later class features?

Rules Questions

Hey guys! Way back when I was a wee lvl 5 soldier I picked the enhanced resistance feat.

I just realised my lvl 13 and 17 features are now kinda.... terrible as a result.

One gives me DR3 which is essentially negated by having DR13 at that point.

And one of the big bits of the lvl 17 feature is that it gives DR10. So.... did I just cheat myself out of my higher level features?

Feels a bit naff to be perfectly honest. If they let you change the DR to an ER then thatd be good but... nothing like that is mentioned.

Dosnt even say it stacks.

Any advice, can I salvage this somehow or do I just need to grin and bear it.

Ask your GM if they'll let you use a mnemonic editor later in your career to change out your feat.

I believe you are correct that the DR/- doesn't stack. So yeah, that early general feat choice certainly outshines the class abilities of the Guard Fighter class.

Aside from the mnemonic editor mentioned earlier to retrain the Enhanced Resistance feat (either switching it to one of the energy types, or replacing it entirely), you could see if the GM is willing to houserule/augment the Guard Fighter class abilities. Have those abilities grant an Energy Resistance to one type of energy instead of DR/-.

That would effectively flip/flop the DR and ER granted by the general feat and class abilities.

You could retrain either - and probably should if one energy type pops way more often than physical damage - but "ruined" seems a bit harsh.

Guard's DR isn't great, but it's not the core of the style.
Everything else is still there, and would benefit greatly from the much better DR Enhanced Resistance gives you.
If you're taking hits for your friends on top of whatever your foes already throw at you, reducing all that damage as much as possible is good.

It really depends on how your game works out, and what playstyle you're looking for, but it's not that big a waste.
Not ideal, maybe, but not terrible.
If you have a better feat in mind, or if you could make better use of a specific ER, go for it. Otherwise, it's still pretty good.
...
Or rather, I really wouldn't do a bodyguard character without it : you need to be alive to protect people.

The Guard soldier in my local group took Enhanced Resistance (Fire) specifically because he didn't want to interfere with his later class DR. He doesn't regret it, since the number of enemies with laser or plasma weapons has not been insignificant.
