Raising Unarmed Strikes Proficiency without monk as base class?

Advice

Is it viable in any way?
Friend wants to possibly play a rogue that's all about kicking and headbutting.

As a Rogue? Not at the moment. Barbarians advance in Unarmed as they do everything else (capping at Master), as do Mutagenist Alchemists (capping at Expert), so it's not Monk exclusive, but it is pretty Class restricted.

I'll pass it on. I saw that she can at least multiclass into monk dedication to increase the die size, so that might at least be something!

On a mechanical level, attacking with something you're only Trained with when you have things you're Expert or Master with (which Rogues have) is terrible and will sink your damage down by huge amounts.

He'd be much better off going Monk (or Barbarian) and multiclassing to get the Rogue stuff he wants if he's gonna be doing unarmed combat.

I figured as much. Gonna pass this on and recommend sticking to rogue weapons and using the unarmed strikes as backup when shit hits the fan. Was a little miffed monk archetype didn't increase unarmed strikes at all.

It's a rare multiclass that raises any armor or weapon proficiency above Trained. Fighter does it, eventually, but specifically not for unarmed.

Multiclassing into rogue might work for your friend, depending on what he wants out of it ? Sneaky roguish monks are a step towards ninjadom.

Edit :
I forgot : depending on how much of a hurry he's in, we are getting some more archetypes pretty soon - in a few weeks in fact - including the students from the Houses of Perfection, which could potentially turn out to be very relevant your kickpunchy rogue.
Or the Red Mantis, if coming from the monk side of things.

If she goes Strength (Ruffian?) rogue and uses gauntlets that'll get pretty close to the concept I'd think. Not true unarmed, but pretty much the closest you can get. And you don't sacrifice mechanical efficacy that way either.

This is punches rather than kicks and headbutts, but it works fine mechanically, yeah.
