I'm really drawn to campaigns with a strong central storyline and good characterisation. My first AP was Crimson Throne and I thought it was terrific. Currently we're playing Kingmaker, and there's barely a plot at all. What are your top recommendations for an AP with a good, strong story?

If you're looking for something urban, Hell's Rebels is really good.

If you want something political, War for the Crown is spectacular (though it has a huge cast).

My personal favorite is Iron Gods.

Ironfang Invasion is also another favorite of mine, it has a wilderness focus, but is more focused than Kingmaker.

Mummy's Mask is another favorite if you want something more exotic.

While Secrets of Roderic's Cove is an absolutely amazing adventure in its own right, the rest of the AP is pretty much the exact opposite of what JDawg is asking for. It has a virtually non-existent central plotline, with each chapter essentially being essentially a stand-alone adventure.

I would second captain yesterday's suggestion of War for the Crown. It has a huge cast, but it really has a lot of room for the GM to expand on the world.

Shadow Lodge

Kingmaker is Paizo's most free form, sandbox style AP. Literally every other AP has more railroading, I mean, strong central storyline than that one. Serpent's Skull and Ruins of Azlant are a little bit sandboxy, the only other ones I can think of that come vaguely close to the style of Kingmaker.
