Teaser trailer for Disney's live-action Mulan

I've got to say, I'm impressed. Just from this brief look, the movie has the potential to be visually stunning and action packed.

That looks absolutely awesome!!

Now THIS is a Disney live-action remake I'd gladly watch in theatre!

So far, none of the other Disney live-action remakes (except for Malificent) have really grabbed my attention -- not saying they were bad. But this Mulan!...
(Although, I might go see the Lion King with my niece & nephew, so...)

<hyped>

\(^o^)/

Carry on,

Finally. A live action Disney movie I'll go see.

Sovereign Court

Where's Mushu?

Hopefully not around.

Scarab Sages

Yeah, I noticed they didn't show Mushu in this. According to IMDB, they had offered the role to Eddie Murphy but he turned it down.

Scarab Sages

Also according to IMDB, Jet Li is playing the Emperor, and Jason Scott Lee will be the primary antagonist (renamed Bori Khan for this version).

Teaser of Mulan looks very seductive and tempting. I really hope that Disney will meet the expectations of the fans, because I personally do not want this remake to become a complete disappointment for me. The actress is selected flawlessly. The plot was originally good. Interestingly, will they add something new to the story?

Trailer looks really good. I will definitely see this.

OTOH, at the same time I'm a little puzzled that Disney has spent so much time cranking out live action versions of (it seems) their entire catalog of animated films. Yeah, they're doing original stuff, too. Still...

2010 Alice in Wonderland
2010 Sorcerer's Apprentice
2014 Maleficent (I do give them some credit for this)
2015 Cinderella
2016 The Jungle Book
2017 Beauty and the Beast
2019 Dumbo
2019 Aladdin
2019 Lady and the Tramp
2020 Mulan
2020 Cruella (presumably 101 Dalmations' "Maleficent")

I didn't want to take the list back further than 2010, but if nothing else two 100+ Dalmatian live action movies were made in the 90's and 00's.

Early reviews are not good.

Hopefully Black Widow gets spared the Disney Live Action curse.

Liberty's Edge

Black Widow is not a Disney Live Action movie like Mulan or Beauty and the Beast though - not sure what point you are trying to make.

Black Widow is Marvel first and foremost, and I think we all can agree that Marvel MCU movies all do pretty well

Disney's live-action Mulan takes everything that made the original animated film great--every dramatic and powerful moment--and completely guts it. The result is a movie without bone, flesh, or spirit. It is an empty shell, a discarded husk, devoid of anything but mediocrity. If it were not called MULAN, if I had no knowledge of the original, this movie would blend in with every other wuxia unknown in its utter blandness. Don't waste your money.

Actors do alright, but the writing is terrible. Special effects are equivalent to other modern wuxia films with nothing really standing out.

Among a great many other issues, at no point does anyone in the film even mention China, or refer to themselves as Chinese. Guess the film makers are cowards who fear the current attitudes. Oh, and the Huns aren't Huns either, because portraying them as invaders would be...racist...I guess?

Dumpster fire of a film.

I don't have plans to see it, but why would it refer to China or have people refer to themselves as Chinese? the vast majority of movies don't have references to the country they're set in or nationality of the characters, especially when it's all set in one place and isn't a globe hopping adventure. I'm fairly certain for example that Ant Man never says "look at that guy, he can shrink, and here in America!". The visuals can effectively communicate where the setting of most stories are without dialogue doing so.

They sure did it enough in the original.

It's a relatively minor issue compared to some of the others though, which I won't mention as they will spoil the movie.

These versions allow Disney to renew their copyrights.

Most of these things are nowhere near going out of copyright and in many cases the underlying story isn't copyrightable anyway. Anyone could make their own version of Mulan or of Cinderella or most of the others.

It seems silly to refer to the Disney animated version as "the original", particularly since it wasn't a faithful adaptation to begin with.

My cousin's wife, an inveterate Mulan fan since preschool, said basically she was major disappointed that they turned the main character into yet another "The One"; and/or a bit of a Mary Sue as well.

The whole point of the character arc was that Mulan was ordinary in every way, except determination. And we can all be more determined should we choose. Thus we could all be Mulan and so the story is compelling.

Mulan live action? It's like watching someone else play a video game knowing you'll never get a chance to play yourself.

Summary review: Meh.

As Ryan George of Pitch meetings put it:

"She's Anakin. She's Rey. She's Neo. She's freakin' Maybeline."

"Oh, being born with it is TIGHT!"

It sure is!

YW. :)

I'll watch it at some point. The cinematography is amazing, the design awesome and maybe the soundtrack is good.
