Toppling spell + Magic Missile how many checks?

If I cast a toppling magic missile and have all the darts target 1 creature how many trip checks have to be made against the creature? (Assume 5 darts for this example.)

I hypothesize only one trip attempt will need to be made, I'm just a doubtful person.

It’s one per target hit by your spell. So at level 3 with two missiles, you can send two missiles to one target and get one trip attempt or you can send one missile to two targets and get two checks (1/target)

Toppling magic missile is a multiple target debuff, not a damage spell.
