Weirdly Excited about Book 2's Shireen background

Attack of the Swarm

So one of the biggest holes in Starfinder's supporting story are the Shireen and their origins. Despite being former members of the Swarm, nobody treats them any differently and they appear to be a major cultural force in the Pact Worlds. I'm imagining that the reason the Swarm didn't bulldoze civilized space is because the Shireen warned everybody.

Yeah, this will be interesting! Maybe something more on how they became severed from the hive and some violent back history. Maybe now the Swarm hates the Shireen and want to destroy them most of all or the opposite: bring them back into their fold and use them as spies prepping for invasion!

There’s probably a good reason this ap features a Hylaxian priest who is also a Shireen. I bet the Shireen and Hylax religion consider it their duty to fight the Swarm.

Hylax is all about peace and diplomacy, so most shirrens of that religion are more about saving sentient species from the Swarm than taking the fight to the Swarm. However, there are a few apostates out there who believe they might be able to redeem the Swarm by force! I think we detail that group a little more in the "Church of Hylax" article in a later volume, but #20 does fill in a lot of the gaps of shirren history.

Also, because we had some extra space to fill, I added in a spell inspired by whip of spiders.

Dope spell tease, I can't wait to get my hands on it!!!

Whip of spiders you say?

I have to say I also really enjoy how Book 2, and much of the AotS AP, focus on the Shirren backstory. One of my big complaints with Dead Suns was that it was a series of short encounters which didn't really show off the history of the setting.

I like how AotS is a story that stands on its own merits but involves the players in the history of the Shirren. It makes the world feel much more rich and alive.
