Magic jar as a spell like ability?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I noticed some monsters such as the shadow demon have magic jar as an SLA. Since SLAs have no components, where exactly is the soul stored if there's no gem? Does the SLA just create a gem for that purpose which disappears at the end of the spell? that would make the most sense to me.

Although I haven't seen Rules As Written on these, I always assumed (from following PbPs(*)) that when one of these incorporeal creatures possesses you, they disappear from the point of view of everyone else, and the victim's soul is just trapped. If a corporeal creature does it, presumably their body acts as the gem.

(*)But beware of unintentional house rules -- these tend to happen in the absence of easily-found rules. The 1st Edition AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide was a huge cause of these . . . .

There is a section in Occult Adventures that introduces the possession/greater possession spells which are basically magic jar but with no components. It goes further into detail about how GM's should replace the new spell for magic jar for any monster that has it as a SLA since it works better with the flavor of the creature.
