So in the first book there is a thylacine that fell into a pit and got stuck. The idea is if the players fall in the thylacine tries to eat them. Now I was thinking: if the players don't fall in but see the trapped thylacine I would think (assuming they are good aligned) they'd want to help it since it's basically an innocent animal in the wrong place at the wrong time. That said, how might they free it without getting eaten in the process? Maybe use speak with animals to tell it they are here to rescue it? Or just charm it? Also personally I would give bonus xp (like twice the amount they would get from killing it) if they managed to free it somehow.

A few option.
Put the beast to sleep (magical or herbal drugs), lower someone, slide rope (or net) underneath it, pull out.
A Druid, Hunter, Ranger or cleric with animal Domain would work well here.
Hold Animal spell is another good way to help it, if you can't drug it to sleep.
Personally, I would give them full XP for the encounter as they defeated it through a creative manner, but I wouldn't give them more. Depending how they go about it, they could gain a shadow that could help them (warn them of danger, become a animal companion).

Even without magic or class abilities, a group could be smart about this. Throw down some food for the poor creature, which is probably ravenous from being trapped at the bottom of a pit trap. I'm not saying that the unintelligent animal should 'trust' them at that point, but if it is fed and they aren't threatening perhaps they can find a way to pull it out with a lasso or something.

I hadn't defined how big the pit was that the beast was stuck in. My players crafted a crude ramp with food at the top for it climb out. Then they backed off as far as they could but not so far that they couldn't watch.
It's such a minor encounter with no campaign impact that I let their plan succeed and moved on.

Leave it, and build a town there called Thylacine Pit.
Callous rulers would keep it alive, enlarge the pit and have pitfight with it. Good for morale and finance.
And by this I wish to make clean that I do NOT condone dog/cock/bear/x pit fight, simply recognizing that it was a known form of entertainment back then.
