BB sheet + Core Rulebook - possible?

Beginner Box

My son asked me the other day if he could build a Half-orc Wizard for our first game.

I have not yet tried to build a character from scratch using the core rulebook before.

So, this is a very basic question (so forgive me), but are we limited in any bad way if we use the character sheet from BB and use the core rulebook to build his charater?

Thanks in advance.

I think it depends on the goal, and why you want to use the BB sheet with the core rules.

Races in the BB are relatively simple, so if you're playing with the BB rules and the blocker is not having racial traits for half-orcs in the BB, you could simply house-rule the traits:

  • Speed 30 feet (6 squares)
  • Darkvision 60 feet
  • Orc Blood: You count as both a human and orc for effects and abilities.
  • Orc Ferocity: When brought below 0 hp but not killed, you can fight for one more round. If you aren't restored to above 0 hp by the end of the bonus round, you fall unconscious and start to die.
  • Weapon Familiarity: You know how to use greataxes and scimitars, no matter what your class is.

If you're using the core rulebook to build a character but plan to play with the BB rules, you'll find there are some stats and skills that aren't on the BB sheet, but the BB rules won't use them anyway.

The biggest differences on the BB sheet are all omissions:

  • the Combat Maneuver stats (CMB and CMD)
  • Several skills (Appraise, Craft, Disguise, Escape Artist, Fly, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Linguistics, Perform, Profession, Sleight of Hand, Survival, and Use Magic Device)
  • Touch and flat-footed AC
  • Spell Resistance

If you're using the core rulebook rules to both roll the character and play, you'll want to use a sheet designed for it (like the official CRB sheet) as there are just too many things missing from the BB sheet.

Thanks, Garrett! :)

My son did'nt want to play any of the races from BB, and as a bonus I get the chance to build a character from scratch using the Core Rulebook. A win-win!

When I look at the big sheet, it seems very complex compared to the sheet from BB. Especially for my son (he is 11 years old). So if he can choose anyone races and classes an still use the BB sheet, that would for us, be a perfect match.

Sorry, but what do you meen with 'blocker'?

So, all-in-all, you don't think it is a good idea to NOT use the "full" character sheet?

Races in the Beginner Box are really simple, especially compared to the Core Rulebook. If you're using the Beginner Box rules to play the campaign, and the only reason you're using the Core Rulebook to make the character is because half-orcs aren't in the Beginner Box, then I think it's a better idea to create your own half-orc racial traits for the Beginner Box rules than to use the Core Rulebook at all. You'd get to use the Beginner Box rules and character sheets seamlessly.

Here's another way to put it: Use the character sheet that matches the rules you're using to play, regardless of how you roll the character. It's a good idea to use the full Core character sheet if you're using the Core rules to actually play the campaign, and a bad idea to use the Core sheet if you're using the Beginner Box rules to play the campaign.
