Gravelands Survivors, Chapter 1 "Rising to the Challenge"
Trapped in the Crypts of Mordesha for the last Six (6) Years...
...Life is hell. Or the abyss. Whatever you want to call it, or believe. You might wonder if you are the last living beings in the country of Lastwall, perhaps all of Golarion, for indeed, the Scouts Rotation - of which some of you perhaps periodically join - continues to confirm that the town of Yua's Hope remains entirely overrun by throngs of The Dead. 20 captives stuck below ground subsisting on stale, magically conjured gruel, day in, day out. Days turned to weeks, weeks to months, months to years. Barely, by a thinnest thread, the morale of the group held together by the decreasing hope of reaching the surface alive and unbitten. Every day down here is an eternity. But. Though the situation may be bleak, you have your life, and a close knit group of people who have become somewhat of a surrogate family, headed by the woman who led you to safety down here when they first attacked, Dame Talia Gildar, a strategic officer of Lastwall, and sustained by the gentle hand of Constan Russi, a devout of Iomedae, rationing what little food his connection to the divine is able to supply.
As well as all the others...
To Do:
In your first post, write your Origin Story.
Q) Were you a native of Yua's Hope when it was attacked? Just passing through?
Q) What happened that night? Why did you flee to the Crypts of Mordesha instead of fighting?
Q) How do you help support the survival of the group? Or perhaps you are too dejected to care? What do the others think of you?
Then, describe your Connections with the other NPCs:
1) Choose a Leader - either Dame Talia Gildar or Constan Russi - and describe at least one interaction with them these last 6 years.
2) Choose 1-2 other Fellow Survivors below, and describe at least one interaction or ongoing dynamic with them these last 6 years.
3) For each NPC (one Leader, 1-2 Fellow Survivors), roll a single check that best represents that interaction or ongoing dynamic.
Note: The "suggested skills" is just that. Feel free to take creative liberties with any / all NPCs below, and use a different skill / check / save, etc. This is our story!
☠☠☠ ☠☠☠ ☠☠☠
Dame Talia Gildar
(devoted female human strategic officer)
Urged to retire and enjoy her golden years, Dame Talia settled for coordinating the supply lines that ran through Yua's Hope. When the undead marched on her town, rather than picking up her sword, she agreed to accompany the survivors into the crypts, believing her cool head would help keep the frightened civilians from panicking. To many if not all of the survivors, she is a symbol of strength and determination.
Suggested Skills: Society, Survival, Warfare Lore
Constan Russi
(dedicated male human cleric of Iomedae)
A devout Iomedaaen, Constan has spent the last six years delivering sermons of hope to the forlorn survivors. He is a serious, contemplative man, but he offers kind wisdom to anyone in need of advice. Every day, he prays for and casts create food to keep the survivors going, supplemented occasionally by a Scouts Rotation who determine if foraging above is even possible, which, on rare instances that it is, more often than not proves unfruitful.
Suggested Skills: Religion, Survival, Iomedae Lore
The Dwarf Smith, Rokvel Hardbrow (1)
(contemplative dwarf blacksmith)
Before the arrival of the Whispering Tyrant, Rokvel was Yua's Hope's resident blacksmith, specializing in the crafting of breastplates for crusading knights. Of all the survivors, she is the least concerned with living underground.
Suggested Skills: Crafting, Puzzle Lore
The Reformed Raider, Garaag Sunbrand (1)
(standoffish orc laborer)
Garaag was accompanying a group Belkzen raiders into Lastwall when the Whispering Tyrant's forces arrived. The freshest warrior in his hold, Garaag had never seen true battle and still feels shame for fleeing the undead rather than dying alongside his fellow warriors.
Suggested Skills: Athletics, Orc Lore
The Fox Scouts (4)
Jono Brushpaw (aloof kitsune rnger), Yiluva Brushpaw (fierce kitsune ranger), Retsnav and Retsnov (shy and rambunctious kitsune kits)
The parents Jono and Yiluva have ranged Lastwall since they were kits. When Tar-Baphon's forces arrived on Lastwall's shores, the Brushpaws warned as many settlements as they could, including Yua's Hope. For their bravery, the kitsune were offered a place sheltered within the crypts.
Suggested Skills: Nature, Scouting Lore
The Orphan, Marko Blightender (1)
(brooding human teenager)
Both of Marko's moms were Knights of Ozem who were in the field when Tar-Baphon's forces laid siege to Lastwall. Everyone assumes the worst for them, although Marko holds out hope that someday his mothers will return.
Suggested Skills: Acrobatics, Knights of Ozem Lore
The Performers (4)
Alyzo Shardhelm (vain human singer-songwriter), Crasian Pattertap (uncaring halfling vocalist), Kleb and Bicky (mischevous and impulsive goblin banjoist and percussionist)
The traveling band "Querelous Quartet" took shelter in Yua's Hope the same night the Brushpaws arrived with their dire warning that undead were invading Lastwall, buoying the survivor's spirits with occasional, if muted and quiet, song.
Suggested Skills: Performance, Art Lore
The Unlucky Chef (2)
Hurdauw Pulsoma (anxious human chef) and Jystolo (curious human youngster)
The former chef of Hope's Breath Inn in Yua's Hope discovered that her no-good cheat of a husband had plans to run off the same night Tar-Baphon's forces attacked. Not long after, Hurdauw realized she was pregnant.
Suggested Skills: Crafting, Cooking Lore

Barlespin
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Barlespin's exploration of Lastwall, in search of legends about interesting lost artifacts and objects of interest and power, was not going well when he arrived in Yua's Hope just as the attack was about to begin. He offered his assistance to Dame Talia Glidar, to help prepare defenses ... but those defenses were quickly overrun, and he helped to convince Dame Talia that they couldn't hold their position.
Within the Crypts, Barlespin found a useful role among the community telling stories related to his many travels and esoterica. These stories, and the curious storyteller, often gained the attention of the young kitsune kits, and helped keep them out of trouble. In particular, he is one of the few who has bonded with Garaag Sunbrand, not being cowed by the standoffish orc's demeanor.
Dame Talia Glidar (Diplomacy): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Retsnav and Retsnov (Esoteric Lore): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Garaag Sunbrand (Intimidation): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Their almost-death was just the beginning. They were separated from their foster human family during the escape and were supposed to hide in the Crypt. Mistaken for a human, they were bitten and believed for days that the infection would claim their life—until they were found and healed.
Their foster family? Gone. They hadn’t been able to hide with them in the Crypt. Or perhaps the family had gone another way and survived. They don’t know. If not for Dame Talia Gildar, who saved them, they might have shared the same fate, whatever that fate was.
Society: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Yua’s Hope had been their home. It was where they first became conscious leshy. But the attack of the undead forced them to flee. With no experience in fighting, all they could do was run. And run. And run until one of the undead caught them and bit them.
When they regained consciousness in the ward, weeks had already passed. Beside them were other survivors who soon became friends, among them the pregnant chef Hurdauw Pulsoma. She was the one who spared them more than the usual food rations while they healed. She also taught them how to cook, though in time they turned their focus to making herbal medicines and concoctions instead of meals. These talents allowed them to aid the sick, and even to help during the chef’s labor and the birth of her child.
Crafting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
The fear of that close call never left them, and now they fight against the undead that nearly killed them, determined to protect others from the same fate. Having studied alchemy with a focus on healing, they use their skills to aid those in need. They even keep a familiar hidden inside their pumpkin head as an extra resource.
"Red" Agnes
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Agnes was having the best night of her life. Heinrich had finally found the courage to ask Papa for her hand and he agreed to allow a marriage next spring. Mama cried but promised to give her the dress that she wore when she and Papa wed. Marta was jealous of course. How dare her younger sister found a husband before her. Nevertheless Agnes could tell she was secretly happy for her. The common room of The Bearded Goose was full of life. Dozens of patrons were in attendance at an impromptu celebration of her engagement. All was well until the dead arrived.
It happened so fast. Mrs. Orzist was first to fall, followed by Willem and little Gerta. Chaos reigned as the dead attacked indiscriminately. Sir Karl tried to hold back the assault, but the old man no longer had the strength or stamina to match his skill. As he fell Papa took his place, wielding the large cleaver he uses to butcher pig carcasses. He shouted for Mama to take everyone and head to the root cellar to hide but the dead were too many. He fell and Heinrich went as well. Agnes grabbed Sir Karl's sword in a desperate attempt to fight back, but she was no warrior. It became hazy after that. When the fog cleared, Agnes found herself in the cellar with Mama and Mrs. Beimler and young Bruno Altdorf. Of the thirty-seven people at the celebration, they were all that remained and Mama was gravely injured. She died the next day.
The night after Mama passed the horrific energies that empowered the undead horde caused her to rise and attack. Bruno was killed before Agnes was able to use Sir Karl's sword to put Mama to rest. Some time later Bruno, too, rose, only to be cleaved in twain by a much more prepared Agnes. Nearly a week later, thirst finally drove Agnes and Mrs. Beimler to emerge from their hiding spot and try to escape. Their flight was horrific. They were attacked by many formerly friendly faces the worst being her betrothed, Heinrich, and her sister, Marta. Fortune was with Agnes and years of working the tavern gave her the strength and stamina to fight her way to relative safety. She lost Mrs. Beimler along the way but eventually a despondent and defeated Agnes found herself among the few survivors in the crypts below Yua's Hope.
Malendyl Sarmaris
|
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Back when the Gravelands were still known as Lastwall, Malendyl was part of the army. He's short for an elf, and not as strong as most of his his fellow soldiers, but that made him an excellent scout. He could sneak ahead unseen and judge the situation before reporting back to the unit. He learned to get along in the wild, as well as identify threats and exploit weak points.
But then, out of nowhere, the undead poured into Yua's Hope. Perhaps Malendyl had gotten lazy on his patrols, maybe it was an oversight, or maybe it was just sheer bad luck, but this should not have happened. As an army scout, this is exactly what he should have seen coming. Not trained for large-scale battles, Dame Talia Gildar ordered him to open up the crypts and make sure everything was safe for the refugees.
Still, the last few years have been difficult. Not least of which living with the professional guilt of failing in his duty as a scout, but also leaving his fellow army mates behind on the battlefield. But also being trapped underground with so few people and little chance of survival. Luckily the priest can conjure gruel for the group, and Malendyl went aboveground to scavenge additional food whenever possible. At least Malendyl can get some fresh air every once in a while, he supposes, but trading in the musty crypt for a the sight of his devastated village isn't much better. Seeing the undead roam around where he grew up used to fill him with anger, but it's turned to a muted pessimism instead. Twenty survivors, many of which aren't fit to fight, aren't enough to retake Yua's Hope, and after so long - Gods, has it already been six years? - it doesn't look like help isn't coming. There's no way to get out of this situation. We're not actively losing this fight, but we're certainly not winning it, either.
After his latest topside raid for food, he informs Dame Talia Gildar of the situation. "Dame Gildar, the situation's much like before. The undead seem to be mindlessly shuffling about, no real directing force behind them. Looks like they're staying put unless something urges them on. What's worse, food has been getting harder to find. After six years, we've raided most of the pantries in the village, and without someone regularly tending to the crops, farming for food isn't an option either. I'd give us a year at most before we're out of mundane food and have to rely on the priest for sustenance."
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
He rejoins the Brushpaw family. He and Yiluva went scouting up above while Jono tended to the kits. The two parents are happily in each others' arms, glad nothing bad had happened. Malendyl's glad they have people who care for them, but it still stings that he has no one anymore. He pushes those emotions aside and starts to discuss if it's an option to scout further out into the woods around the village, or if it's too risky with all the undead about.
Nature: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Barlespin already interacted with these as well, so maybe I should've interacted with someone else (I had an idea for Marko), but these seemed to fit best.
"Red" Agnes
Agnes shut down after the horrors of her escape from the root cellar. She barely spoke and only ate when prompted. Despair ruled her existence. Constan Russi tried to comfort her with prayer to no avail. Eventually the grief and hopelessness became too much for her. In the middle of the night she took Sir Karl's sword and her piecemeal armor and stealthily approached the crypt's egress, determined to destroy as many undead as she could before being overwhelmed and joining her family in oblivion.
As she reached the door she heard a voice behind her. It was Dame Talia. "Getting yourself killed won't bring them back you know."
Agnes sighed and turned to face the older woman. "I can't go on like this. I've lost everything. Heinrich. Marta. Mama and Papa. Everyone in the tavern that night is dead. Even little Gerta. They were all torn apart before my eyes. Every night I relive that horror in my nightmares." Tears began to flow freely from Agnes's face. "I can't go on like this. I want to rejoin my family. No matter the cost."
Dame Talia approached, her eyes kind and her voice soft. "You've been through hell girl, that's true, with worse to come I imagine. But while you live there is still hope. This village was founded on hope. You're stronger than you think. I was there the night we found you when we were out scouting. You were surrounded by a handful of the dead but you still managed to fight like a wildcat and take them all down. How could you do that? You're a simple country barmaid." She shakes her head. "I think I know why. You talk in your sleep. Calling out to your family. Constan senses an energy about you when that happens. He says your are haunted by your past. I think it's more than that. I think that the spirits of your loved ones are communicating with you, lending you their strength. They want you to live. Not throw your life away needlessly. Ask yourself. Would your Mama and Papa approve of what you plan to do? Would your sister? Would Heinrich? You swing that sword like a club. Let me teach you. Learn to defend yourself properly and live the life that was denied your family."
Blinded by tears Agnes allowed the older woman to gently guide her back to the sleeping area.

Some months later Agnes was resting after a grueling training session with Dame Talia. Left alone, her thoughts strayed to her Mama. Without thinking she closed her eyes and began to hum a slow, somber melody.
She didn't notice Alyzo approach until he began to sing quietly. Startled, Agnes opened her eyes and stopped her humming, allowing Alyzo to finish the song.
"I never knew the words to that song. Mama used to sing it to Marta and I when we were children to get us to go to sleep. She never sang the words though. I always knew it was a sad song." She gave a rueful smile.
Alyzo shook his head. "It's not a sad song. It's a happy song. A hopeful song."
Agnes gave a small sad chuckle. "No it isn't. Didn't you hear yourself? The man in the song was sent off to war and forced to leave his love. She died before he came back and he left flowers on her grave. That's not hopeful at all."
"It is though. She knew she was dying before he left. She knew that if she told him he would stay with her until her death. Then the king would imprison him or worse for not fulfilling his military obligation. Plus she knew that it would hurt him terribly to watch her die. That's why she gave her blessing to go off to war and why she left that locket with the lock of hair in it for him to find upon his return. She wanted him to remember her but still go on with his life. He left the flowers as a farewell. Yes it's a little sad but its also hopeful. Think about that." He stood and left, leaving Agnes to her thoughts.
performance: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
-----------------------------------------------
Six months after joining the survivors in the crypts, Agnes still fought long bouts of melancholy. She would train with Dame Talia, but it was slow going. She would help with some of the daily tasks but without any real effort. One day she was approached by an angry Garaag upon his return from a particularly unsuccessful foraging mission.
Bah. Your training with that big sword serves no purpose. You are still worthless. You swing it as though you were harvesting wheat. Not even skilled enough to accompany us on trips outside, yet you retain the use of one of the best weapons we have for your sole use. It should go to a true warrior. One that can use it properly. Give it to me."
Agnes steps back, frightened. "What? Nnnno. This sword belonged to Sir Karl."
"Well now it belongs to me. Hand it over." He stepped forward to take the bastard sword from her.
"I said no." Agnes refused, more forcefully this time.
"Don't make me hurt you." The orc stepped forward, his hand clenched in a fist.
athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
They scuffled and somehow Agnes managed to retain possession of Sir Karl's sword while Garaag scowled and left.
And that's the end of the flashbacks hopefully. I've been so used to using present tense for PbP that past tense was actually difficult. Also I accidentally posted these under the discussion tab and just now moved them here. Unfortunately the dice rolls failed to properly make the transition. Agnes got a 3 on the first roll and an 10 on the second for a total of 7 performance and 17 athletics.
Marius Tanar
The day that Lastwall fell was just another day for Marius - up at sunrise, laboring in the fields, a midday meal alongside the other workers under the shade of a large tree, and falling asleep almost before he laid his head on the pillow. Except, he never went home that day.
Lucky to escape a brush with an undead horde with his life, Marius scrounged and cobbled together enough supplies and equipment to give himself a fighting chance against wandering undead that he came across. Eventually, he fell in with a band of survivors and they survived off hunting small game. His luck continued when the group came to Yua's Hope and the group of survivors took them in. Soon after, the undead horde caught up and some of inhabitants of Yua's Hope hid underground, Marius among them.
In the long days, months, and years since Marius arrived, he very nearly gave up several times, as the despair and hopeless came close to consuming him utterly and entirely. Looking back, it was only Constan Russi's daily reminders of Iomedae's blessings and the duty the group has to each other that kept Marius alive. Over time, Constan nurtured Marius' belief and faith in Iomedae, and Marius dedicated himself to protecting all those who made Yua's Hope their home.

Spending most of their time in foxform - an effort to reduce their rations - Malendyl adds to his guilt by learning that the mother and father kitsune slowly wear away, becoming thinner this last year especially as their kits (and those of the humans) continue to grow. Finishing Marius' connection posts
Upon their arrival to Yua's Hope, Marius felt immediate kinship with the The Fox Scouts. Despite focusing his time on religious study in recent time Marius' first job was as a laborer in the fields. Once the Brushpaws acclimated to the new surroundings underground, Marius loved hearing tales of the family's travels across the whole of Lastwall - though this was a bittersweet conversation since Lastwall was no more. Over the years, Marius learned much from the kitsunes on how to track wild game and how to forage for food.
The Fox Scouts - Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
-----------------------------
Despite surviving multiple days on the run after the first attacks on Lastwall, Marius was never much of a fighter. In an effort to remedy that weakness, Marius gravitated toward Garaag Sunbrand, as he is clearly the most capable fighter amongst the survivors of Yua's Hope. The cramped quarters underground don't provide much room for sparring, but Garaag was able to teach Marius the basics of swordplay and hand-to-hand combat.

Barlespin examines the potency crystal and is pleased to have Garaag's help in attaching it to his battle axe.
He arrives at the appointed time for the important meeting, sitting in a corner of the room and as always seeming a bit distracted as he pulls some odds and ends out of his various pockets, the weird hoarder always re-arranging things to try to find the ideal configuration.

SPQR receives the notebook from the chef and opens it. They then read its contents as to what it is about. It is the formula for Lastwall Soup, an experiment the chef has not yet been able to get the right herbs for.
They look at her. "Are you sure you want to give this to me? This is a wonderful recipe!" they hug her chef and profusely thank her.
"I will keep this safe. And improve it." they close the small notebook and puts it inside their pumpkin head where their familiar resides.

Agnes reverently accepts the blade. "I...I...I don't know what to say. I'll do my best to honor this legacy this weapon represents. I won't let you down. I won't let the others down. I swear it."
I'm going to assume that since Dame Talia was essentially a supply officer her blade is a simple shortsword.

Whelp, that's a bleak start. ._.
Malendyl notices that Jono and Yiluva's reactions become slower every time they go on a scouting expedition. The kitsune are too proud to admit it themselves, but Malendyl sees how they share part of their own rations with their kits, who devour it without thinking twice.
Malendyl is torn. On the one hand, he wants to voice his concerns, but on the other hand, he knows kitsune are a proud kind, and would never admit to others their own shortcomings. When they start including Marius on their expeditions, Malendyl knows Marius was to replace them at some point.
One day, when checking his equipment, Malendyl finds a shining arrow among his other arrows, as well as two locks of hair. He knows what it means. He doesn't thank his fellow scouts, nor does he hover around them, despite how much he wanted to take care of them. Their pride would not allow it.
He puts the arrow away, swearing to only use it in the most dire situation. The arrow wasn't just a gift; it was a memory of their time together.
Even more morose than usual, Malendyl slumps to the special meeting.

The mood is somber - everyone gathers around...
“Friends. Fellow survivors. Family,” Constan Russi says, his eyes squinting in the sepulchre’s dim light. “Tonight we celebrate the life and legacy of Dame Talia Gildar, Knight of Ozem and crusader of Lastwall. Under her guidance, this congregation has survived many long nights since the undead first arrived on our shores. Perhaps neither comfortably nor peacefully, but we endure because of the strength and wisdom of Dame Talia. Now the time has come for the Lady of Graves to beckon Talia to the Great Beyond, where she will join Iomedae’s glorious host against the forces of evil. I know I speak for all of us when I attest to the late Dame’s character. Talia was an honorable crusader and a wise knight. A caring friend and a comforting confidant. To some, she was as a mother.” Voices murmur in agreement as Constan continues his sermon. “When I reflect upon my time with Talia, I think of the Fourth Act of Iomedae, and how Dame Talia’s bravery mirrored that of the Inheritor in so many ways. As the Fourth Act reminds us, at the Second Battle of Encarthan, Iomedae faced a horde of undead wraiths. It was the dead of night, and she and her company were staring down the icy grasp of death. But rather than despair, Iomedae lifted her blade toward the sunless sky and evoked Lord Aroden’s herald, Arazni. ‘The night is cold and dark,’ Iomedae proclaimed, ‘but Heaven’s sun burns brighter than the bleakest night.’ As she declared, so the knights endured, and when reinforcements arrived at the break of dawn, not a soul had perished.”
A chill runs down the spines of those in attendance, in strange contrast to the hopeful tone of Constan’s words. If Constan notices the feeling, he seems to pay it no mind. “We find ourselves much like those knights, tired and fearful after awaiting rescue these six long years. But like the Inheritor, Dame Talia was always there to inspire us. She may be gone, but her words will never be forgotten. In this way, Talia will never truly leave us, not so long as we draw—”
“Look, Mama!” young Jystolo chirps. Tugging at his mother’s sleeve, he points to the casket behind Constan Russi “Talia’s not dead!” Shocked screams fill the sepulchre as the corpse of Dame Talia staggers to its feet inside its casket. Before anyone can act, the body lunges at Constan Russi, ripping out the priest’s throat with its jaws!

Initiative (Perception): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Though it looked as if he was not paying attention, the hefty purple frogman clearly has the mental presence to leap into action. First, though, he takes a moment to assess the situation and see if this creature has a vulnerability he can exploit.
◆ Exploit Vulnerability
Esoteric Lore: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
That is a success against a level 4 DC so I think will work. In addition to identifying the highest weakness, with Diverse Lore feat: Additionally, when you succeed at your check to Exploit a Vulnerability, compare the result of your Esoteric Lore check to the DC to Recall Knowledge for that creature; if that number would be a success or a critical success, you gain information as if you had succeeded at the Recall Knowledge check.
Barplespin darts forward in front of the non-combatants and children - even though, frankly, some of them are probably taller than him - and begins shouting the weaknesses of the creature. He pulls his battle axe as he begins sprinkling some liquid from a vial on it. "Tears from a dying cleric ... sanctified, though admittedly a bit ironic in this situation..." He waves his amulet in a dramatic and, one hopes, useful fashion.

Malendyl had closed his eyes during the sermon. Humans had such short lives, but they made the most of it. The "Personal Antithesis" only applies when the creature has no inherent weakness. The "Exploit Vulnerability" option against a creature with a weakness is:
Mortal Weakness After identifying a creature’s weakness, you use a thematically resonant bit of esoterica to attune your attacks to your discovery. Your unarmed and weapon Strikes activate the highest weakness you discovered with Exploit Vulnerability, even though the damage type your weapon deals doesn’t change. This damage affects the target of your Exploit Vulnerability, as well as any other creatures of the exact same type, but not other creatures with the same weakness. For example, when fighting a pack of werewolves, you might use silver shavings or crushed moonstone to deal damage that applies their weakness to silver to your attacks against any of the werewolves, but you wouldn’t apply this damage to any other monsters with a weakness to silver.
