Not only is it not a great name for it, it's way too vague. without better guidlines we could have 100s of different lores and for someone who plays almost exclusively society that's troubling as the already large number of skills (I think there may be too many given the new skill system). I've been burned by games with skills that are vague before, I don't really want a repeat of that.

Profession: vampire hunter does not do well as a substitute.
I agree with the fact that "profession" sounds better than "lore" but I prefer something vague that allows me to do more tasks than just one.
For example, lore: vampire may be allowed to work as a vampire hunter, but can also perform other jobs as a vampire novelist or play a vampire character in the theater or work as a butler for a vampire xD.

So actually, that's a fair critique of my suggestions. My main issue is that these are things that people did to make a living prior to their adventuring life (and things they can continue to do to make money). "Lore", by definition, is a piece of knowledge. It doesn't imply any practical skill, or means of employment.

Profession: Vampirism Scholar. Anything that needs to sound more like "Lore" can always be "Profession: something Scholar." If there are a lot of these it's probably best to stay with Lore, but I doubt there are that many.

Profession: Vampirism Scholar means that as a job you only do the student of vampirism and nothing else ... so there remains the problem of not being able to do other jobs like vampire hunter or vampire novelist etc ..

Nah, grad students have to take whatever subject-related jobs they can find. Someone who studies vampires (which is all that Lore: Vampires means too) could effectively hunt them, write about them, serve them, whatever.

without better guidlines we could have 100s of different lores...
I think that was actually the intent, since the Acolyte background makes you Trained in "Your Deity Name" Lore. Not to mention Alcohol Lore, Labor Lore, Desert Lore, and Swamp Lore.
They seem to want characters to have an incredibly specific, narrow focus "knowledge" skill, to replace the rather broad Knowledge skills of 1E.

And I'll be straight-up: I think we had about 2 knowledge too many in P1. That hyper specific stuff looks like a waste to me, why put it in a published adventure when (unless its an AP) it has a .01% chance of being relevant because there are infinite Lores? That doesn't seem relevant or a good use of page space (in the adventure or on a character sheet)
