A bit of magus / swashbuckler advice... the mysterious avenger and Eldritch scion?

Advice

Grand Lodge

Hi guys

Throwing together a level 6 character to plug into chapter 2 of RotRL. I’ve set my heart on an Eldritch Scion and have built my character to be high Str and Cha (you don’t specifically need a high dex build for the class).

In my build I’ve noticed I get a swashbuckler combat feat at 4. This is a nice welcome.

But

The swashbuckler has the option to take the mysterious avenger. Sure, I lose nimble but i’m Ok on that for now...

What I gain is 3 more saves with Cha bonus, and the opportunity to also add it to AC. I also get a move action to study an opponent for a bonus + 1 to hit and damage over and above what I get already...

Unfortunately this comes at the cost of my swashbuckler bonus feat :(

Debate over the Eldritch scion aside or why I am taking only 1 level of magus initially, what’s your thoughts on the Mysterious Avenger vs vanilla swashbuckler?

I won’t be taking anymore levels of swashbuckler. It’s magus for the rest of the way...

Oh, and is there any way I can get something like the half Elf multitalented without being a half elf?

I would advice against the mix. Magus hurts any loss of casterlevel, swashbuckler is a nice class without multiclassing...

If you take more than one level of swashbuckler, level 5 should be a must have.

I am playing a monk of the scaled hand/eldritch scion build right now, and I can tell you: it sucks missing those magus levels. My charisma is actually ridiculous, so my spells are still ready good, but I would advise on more than 2 levels in multiclassing.

Also, I don't see why you want to play the mysterious avenger, to be honest. If you do it to get charisma on AC, there are easier ways to do that.

You are not getting a swashbuckler feat from Eldridge Scion, are you taking a different class or did you mean that you took Flamboyant Arcana at 3rd level as a Magus Arcana?

At 3rd level you get a Magus Arcana. One of your options would be Flamboyant Arcana which gives you two specific Swashbuckler deeds.

At 5th level you get a bonus feat. It can be any combat, meta magic or item creation feat that you meet the prequisites for.

Please look again at the build and let us know what you are doing.

Some confusion over my reading of hero lab.its swashbuckler 5 I’m taking 5 of the swashbuckler

So... 5 level of swashbuckler and 1 level of eldritch scion? Is that correct?

The 3 extra uses of Charmed Life and the ability to use it on AC as well as saves is worth far more than a bonus feat, which is after all, just a feat.

Unless you NEED a ton of feats quickly (and more than being human can net you), it's probably worth it.

The "Better" magus-swashbuckler combo is Inspired Blade because you get Int+Cha to Panache and switch your swashbuckler side to int, but Eldritch Scion works to switch youR Magus side to CHA.

But remember, Eldritch Scion can"t enhance a weapon, only use a bloodrager power.
