Transmutation. It's the largest, most versatile school with a ton of situational options that just become crazy when you can spontaneously cast every option. Indeed a Wizard that only prepared transmutation spells without using the amulet could still be a pretty solid character. Conjuration, for the same reason, is a solid runner up. While it's more powerful and quite versatile, transmutation wins the versatility contest by far if you don't need to worry about knowing what spells to prepare.
Also the amulet weights 2 pounds. Unusually high for an amulet. That's 2 cubic inches of solid lead and 3 cubic inches of solid pure gold.

I agree that transmutation is far more versatile, but if that's your pick you might as well just use some annihilation spectacles.
Sheesh, that's a fantastic item. Shame it only works for a very specific character type.
Not so! The universalist school is a wizard class feature and can thus be emulated with a DC 21 Use Magic Device check, allowing you to activate the amulet as if you were a universalist wizard.
