Animal Companion Stealth Attack

Rules Questions

I don't understand steath and sneaking up on people very well.

Could a big cat animal companion sneak up on someone and get an attack against a flatfooted enemy? Do you need you sneak right up to them?

Could you sneak up to 30 feat away and then charge? Is the foe flat footed then?

If the foe had a reach weapon and combat reflexes, would it get an AoO?

Any info on this would help. Thanks

So, to start with anyone can get an attack against a flat footed opponent regardless of stealth. (unless they have an ability that states otherwise) Creatures are flat footed at the start of combat only remain so until they act. After that point they are no longer flat footed.

If combat starts and you or your cat is close enough to charge an enemy you can do so and if that enemy hasn't acted yet they are flat footed.

What I think you're referring to is total concealment due to stealth checks. If after combat starts the cat is able to make a stealth check (either due to a diversion or partial concealment), if the check isn't beaten by the enemy's perception check then the cat is treated as though they have total concealment.

When you have total concealment and you attack an enemy that enemy loses their dexterity bonus to AC against your first attack.

To answer your questions though, if an enemy is truly flat-footed the following applies

You can’t use your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) while flat-footed. Barbarians and rogues of high enough level have the uncanny dodge extraordinary ability, which means that they cannot be caught flat-footed. Characters with uncanny dodge retain their Dexterity bonus to their AC and can make attacks of opportunity before they have acted in the first round of combat. A flat-footed character can’t make attacks of opportunity, unless he has the Combat Reflexes feat.

When you have total concealment from an enemy you do not provoke attacks of opportunity from them.

Thanks.

I'm pretty familiar with most of the rules. General flatfootedness and such I understand. I've been playing and GMing for a few years. It's the stealth stuff that I am pretty fuzzy on. I've never used it with my characters and as a GM it hasn't come up very often.

In the game I am running, in an upcoming section the party is stalked by a tribal group with a mix of Rangers with animal companions and fighters with stealth and spring attack. Lots of shooting from hidden positions and running out of the undergrowth to attack once and dive back into cover.

Lots of stealth checks of different kinds. Due to my lack of good understanding of the stealth rules, I figure I better bone up real quick.

You make the stealth check, and you can move to attack them, but you have to take in count the penalties for distance. As you get closer the penalties get lower so if someone rolls a 30 perception check and the DC was 32 because of range, and them being closer drops it to 29 then they will notice you before you get all the way up to them.

So if they had combat reflexes and they notice you they do get the AoO.

If they don't notice you then it doesn't matter if they have combat reflexes.
