Interest Check : Transformers Reboot (HERO 5th Ed Revised)

Recruitment

This is currently just an Interest Check. I've suddenly found myself with a ton of extra time I don't know what to do with, so I started thinking about what I've never run but would enjoy. While trying to think of something to do that was new (and easy to do, since the last game I tried to run in GURPS was so complicated I had to abandon it last year when work interfered, and HERO is always easy), I was flicking through Netflix and happened to notice the new season of 'The Toys that Made Us' was available. The second episode was Transformers, and had a ton of information I never knew about them (If you're curious, I highly recommend this show, you'll find out all sorts of interesting things like the fact Megatron was originally a good guy, and Barbie was based off a prostitute comic, and you'll confirm some things you always knew, like how Star Trek toys were HORRIBLY managed for decades.

Anyway, the concept of this game, if I run it, would be a 'reboot' of the original Transformers. Nobody would be allowed to play Cannon Autobots. This would be because I don't want to have to deal with arguments over what they can do or not do, and also because most of them have random power boosts throughout the series. Besides, I think anyone into this will probably have more fun interacting with the OG Transformers than playing one.

The characters would be a scout crew who crashes on earth, and scans local vehicles to pass while they try to repair their ship. Beyond that, I won't go into detail. So in this continuum, there would be no 60 million year 'hiatus' for the bots (that never made sense anyway). Instead, Cybertron's Great War would be coming to an end near the end of the naughties (2000 to 2009), and the PC's would be refugees from the war (either all Autobots, unaligned/deserters, or a mix of the two). This means I would be allowing a Decepticon deserter, if they had a back story that would mean they have no interest in helping Megatron, and would rather work with independents or even the Autobots rather than help Megatron.

I'm thinking to get the general level of the bots we'd be looking at about 500 point builds, which would include 100 points of disads. If you have experience with the system, you know that's a pretty high power level. Anyway, this is just an interest check for now. If there's sufficient interest, I'll put up a recruitment thread.

Sound off below if you'd like to be more than meets the eye.

I'm interested. And being a Decepticon deserter is easy, if memory serves there are a few autobots who were originally part of Megatron's faction. I mean, his rise to power was oppression via Cybertron's Caste system, (depending on continuity) All it takes is the decepticon seeing how horrible the faction becomes and how much abuse there is among the ranks.

Liberty's Edge

You know what? Why in the bloody nine hells not. Never once has anyone i know of suggested anything like this. If nothing else, I'll sure as hell lurk to see where this goes.

Now I need to look up the system...I seem to recall trying it once, but it's been ages. Do they have an SRD or the like? I know for sure I don't have any books on it.

EDIT: Taking any inspiration from any particular canon or series? Transformers Prime was, in my opinion, the best treatment the franchise has had so far.

Have you watched Robots in Disguise? It's a direct continuation.

Don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that I liked basically everything from the OG series (Pre-Movie), and Transformers Prime, Beast Wars, and the first live action Movie. So that should give you a general idea of where I'm coming from. I'm less thrilled with the later versions of the movies, and not a fan of the series after the movie (with Rodimus Prime instead of Optimus).

If I had to pick one, I'd say the feel should be something of a cross between Prime & live action movie.

As to the rules system, unfortunately, there's no SRD. However, HERO is an easy system, and if I run it, I have no issues helping make characters and such. HERO is a D6 system, with similar mechanics to GURPS but with MASSIVELY less complication factors. :P IE: It's much simpler system. Skills are rated from 8 to 25 or so with 11 to 14 being average. You roll 3d6, and if you roll under your modified skill, you succeed.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. Yes, it does pick up where Prime left off. But it's much more heavily slanted toward 9 to 12 year olds, where Prime was slanted toward adult fans and older kids.

Yes but still a continuation of the universe.

Sounds really cool MDT.

Don't have the system but my time is a bit more free than it has been the previous 8 months, I'd be interested to play with assistance on character creation.

Well, that's 3 so far. If I get another couple of interest posts, I'll put up a recruitment thread.

I've long thought of doing something like this with Mutants and Masterminds. I would definitely submit a character.

And that makes four, so one more to go.

Then I'm that last one. I've never played any of those systems, but I'd be in for anything Transformers related, I've seen... most transformers shows lol.

Kitty! I know very little about Transformers. How filled-with-the-lore would you want players to be?

You need to have watched a movie or two, or watched some of the cartoons, at least, so you're passingly familiar with the material and concepts.

I own over 500 transformers. I hope I'm not over-qualified lol

Awesome.

I gave mine away as a teen. Bought a bunch of re issued fir the kid, she loves them.

I have about a dozen OG from when I was a kid. Two OP's (only one with the trailer though), a Bumblebee, a Jazz, a Cliffjumper, a couple of Insecticons, 3 Arialbots, and a couple of Stunticons. I also have some original Go Bots (including the German silver car one). Also a couple of Macross fighters, some Battletech figures, and a few dozen Gundam figures (ranging from 3 inch gashapods to 18 inch kits).

Anyway, the recruitment thread is up.
