question about undead

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Something that's always bothered me: most undead are evil but typically they are turned undead against their will which turns them evil. I am wondering: If someone who started out as good aligned but became evil due to turning undead be sent to the lower planes or not? Personally I'd say no since they didn't become evil of their own free will.

It depends on the undead.

Something like a skeleton or zombie are mindless undead. Their souls are not at all involved in their involuntary creation.

Something like a vampire could, in theory, seek redemption. Realize what it became and take it's own life as an act of good to stop the corruption taking their soul.

Most spawn, whether from shades, vampires, ghouls, etc. fall under that mindless category. They've no will, and by extension no involved soul. If their soul were still present, I would see killing the spawn more as "freeing" them than your instance.

A lot of the intelligent undead become so out of a grudge that is either life long, or from the act of being killed in a certain way. While it could be argued that seeking revenge on your killer isn't evil, the vast majority of undead will attack any living creature. In the majority of cases I'd say that the act of raising as a spontaneous undead is basically choosing to change your alignment after death.

Now for the cases where someone is forced to become undead either through ritual or because they became pawns of the undead who slayed them is slightly different. In those cases...Pharasma may judge the former undead isn't culpable for their actions as an undead. But really, that is up to Pharasma (and the GMs whim) isn't it?

If it helps, try to avoid conflating the original being with the monster in front of you. It has the original creature's form, possibly memories, but the original creature is dead, its soul held hostage by the undead's animating force. The undead thing is evil, but that doesn't mean the original creature is now evil as well.
